Bacon scraps !? There is no wasting bacon ! LOL

My dad used to chat to the guys at the fruit markets and was allowed to raid their rubbish bins for feed for the cows. He would get at least a ute full every week of slightly off veggies.

Not really. Just people advising that other animals digestive systems are different to that of humans and that you are actually doing them a disservice by feeding them bread. If that’s being a do-gooder, then I might continue in that fashion thanks.

Woolworths sell day old bread at every day prices

I’ve been feeding my 15 free range pigs bread for years and they thrive on it although if they get too much of it they put on too much fat. It is not their main feed which is a combination of commercial pellets with any fruit and veg I can get that Woolies is chucking out. Bread is commonly fed to free range pigs. It can cause constipation in pigs when they are confined in sheds and don’t have access to other forms of fibre, which of course if true for the majority of pigs and goodness knows what they get fed given how much pellets cost and that you can buy pork for under $6 a kilo. From the responses here I don’t think there is anywhere in the area where I can find the 200 or so loaves of bread a week that I would like to find as it would help bring my feed bill down a little bit.

and horses shouldn’t eat a lot of it either. People think its cute to feed them bread but big hunks get all gooey in their gob and they gum it over and over and it becomes a serious choking habitat.

Agree re all the comments on bread not being ideal for animals. The ducks and bread thing has been knowledge for quite some time now but lots of people are completely unaware (BTW: I’m not accusing pixiepig of feeding the bread to ducks). Who was the first person to feed a duck bread and how did they come to the conclusion that it might be good food for them?

It’s kind of like cats and tuna though. Heaps of people think that cats and tuna go hand in hand. Tuna is suprisingly bad for cats. It won’t kill them but will give them plenty of digestion problems. Same goes for cats and milk, that gives them digestion problems as well unless it’s milk from their mother or formulated cat milk.

I went into spasms of guilt a few years ago thinking of all the ducks I possibly killed chucking them bits of white bread when I was a kid.

I’m guessing that you don’t want to pay as much as you would a fresh loaf, otherwise you would buy it and leave it for a day….

I agree with fabforty though – animals are not really equipped to eat/digest bread (any bread). I’d just invest in a more appropriate food stuff that is made fro animals.
