Police will be targeting drink-driving this month as a continuation of their zero tolerance traffic enforcement campaigns.
Traffic Operations Superintendent Mark Colbran said as part of our rolling program of campaigns targeting high risk behaviours on our roads, ACT Policing will intensively target drink drivers with a particular focus on repeat offenders.
Only last week (21 to 27 February) ACT Policing apprehended 21 motorists for drink driving of which ten (47.8%) had previously been apprehended for this offence.
“We are still seeing similar numbers each month of those who continue to drink and drive, and those who are repeat offenders. The message is not getting through. While we are seeing short term benefits during our targeted campaigns, what we really want is a long-term culture change,” Superintendent Colbran said.
“As a community we need to say that drink-driving is not acceptable, and we need to make sure this message gets out to the road users that are putting their lives and that of others in danger.”
February’s targeted speeding campaign resulted in 1207 traffic infringement notices for speeding. This compares to 740 traffic infringement notices issued by police in February 2010.
