Police allege a man was driving dangerously before he rolled his car and was then caught with knives and an axe when officers arrived at the crash scene.

He was allegedly speeding in a white Mitsubishi Lancer while weaving in and out of traffic along Drakeford Drive in Bonython around 11 am on Wednesday (7 January), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

It is alleged he lost control of his car, hit a curb then rolled the vehicle a number of times.

Police say the car flattened the handrail at a pedestrian crossing and pulled a light pole from the ground before it came to a stop.

Officers soon arrived at the scene of the crash and allegedly seized two knives and an axe when they searched the man.

He was arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The 31-year-old from Chisholm faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (8 January) where Magistrate Amy Begley ordered he be taken for a mental health assessment.

He was seen crying and mouthing words to a woman sitting in the courtroom’s gallery, then started wailing loudly before the brief mention of his case ended.

He has not been named while the assessment takes place and will return to court at a future date.

While he wasn’t formally charged in court, police said he had been charged with property damage, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, possessing a knife without a reasonable excuse, reckless driving and using a number plate issued to another vehicle.
