E-cards are impersonal and ‘cheap’, IMHO.
Eg, my (APS) workplace: the edict came down from on high that we were to send e-cards where possible, and the whole Division was only to send one ‘real’ card to each agency.
This edict – clearly a cost-cutting exercise – was pathetically unrealistic for our area, which heavily relies on the goodwill of our many agency contacts, a lot of whom cannot readily access email/internet services for security reasons (eg work at prisons). So, two of us personally purchased 50 ‘real’ cards at the Xmas Card Charity shop and sent them to our particularly valued contacts. We considered this worthwhile as the relationship between our area and our contacts is crucial to the efficiency and productivity of our area. However, the powers-that-be clearly don’t understand or appreciate this.
Further, we were underwhelmed when one particular agency that makes a LOT of money from our Department, sent one person in our area an e-card. That staff member’s comments were ‘I can’t believe they couldn’t “afford” to send an actual Xmas card’.
