Northern Ireland, 1987.

Deirdre is stuck – between arguments, nations, and the lives she almost lived. But when her old school friends gather in her kitchen once again for Christmas Eve, ten years since they were last all together, their growing differences push to the surface a powder-keg, waiting for the tiniest spark. And then one of them turns up with her surprise fiancé.

He’s English.

Set against the backdrop of The Troubles, Never Closer is an unforgettable drama of home, friends, the decision to leave or stay, and the possibility of forgiveness.

Following its acclaimed mainstage premiere at Belvoir St Theatre in 2024, Never Closer makes its ACT debut in a brand new production by Off the Ledge Theatre. With the support of the Canberra Theatre Centre, this sharp, darkly funny, and haunting new Australian play arrives in the capital for a strictly limited two-week season – a chance for local audiences to experience one of the country’s most talked-about new works, right here at home.

Founded in 2025, Off the Ledge Theatre is dedicated to staging bold, contemporary works that centre queer and Australian voices. With an ensemble featuring some of the most exciting emerging actors from Canberra and beyond, this production underscores our commitment to authentic, collaborative, and empathetic storytelling. Never Closer exemplifies our mission to create theatre that challenges, inspires, and connects audiences through thought-provoking narratives.
