In celebration of Australian Dance Week, Canberra Theatre Centre is proud to present BATCHELOR + LEA: a dance week double bill.
Two acclaimed artists originating from Canberra showcase their works on International Dance Day.
- James Batchelor: Shortcuts to Familiar Places (3pm):
Shortcuts to Familiar Places is a personal exploration of memory and history inscribed on the body.
This extraordinary and contemplative work premiered in Berlin and posits Batchelor’s body as a map that is constantly being deconstructed, redrawn and rewritten.
Using film and live performance the work acknowledges the legacy of Batchelor’s dance elders; exploring a movement lineage through his childhood dance teacher Ruth Osborne and centenarian choreographer and dancer Eileen Kramer to the modern dance pioneer Gertrud Bodenwieser.
Joined by fellow dancer Chloe Chignell, who also grew up in Canberra and shares this lineage through Osborne, this personal dance work celebrates the incredible women who have influenced Batchelor’s creative practice and the impact of their work on choreographic practice in Australia.
- Liz Lea: RED (5pm)
RED is fearless, RED is fierce, RED is powerful – a one woman show full of film and fabulousness.
A poignant, riotous and ultimately triumphant exploration of one woman’s story – an exquisite exploration of female endurance. Described as unforgettable, shattering and hilarious, RED is a soul baring retelling of one woman’s journey through illness and recovery with an eye to the future.
Hitch a ride on a race with time that speaks in another tongue through the language of body, movement, words and film. RED is an elusive, fractious and fabulous interdisciplinary performance that brings on the bawdy and banishes the banal.
You will laugh, you’ll cry, you won’t forget.
