The ABC is having a look at what ails the $5 million comms system our rural firies are deeply unhappy with.
The root of the problem seems to lie with the system requiring operators to input their location, something you’d think a GPS could do automatically.
At first glance this would seem to be a result of the new comms system having been designed for the convenience of head office.
Certainly most people who’ve been at the pointy end of anything would be tying to reduce as far as possible the manual intervention required of those on the front line.
They’re tired, they’re stressed, they’re scared, maybe they’re hurt. Build in systemic fault tolerance.
