The images are terrible, but enough to discern between a person or a cat.

Probably neither.

Modern camera sensors are very sensitive to IR and have IR Cut filters – and Surveillace cameras have IR illuminators plus cut filters that switch out on low light levels so they can see in the dark. Either that or the area was fairly well lit. Add motion detection software that generates an alert and off you go.

You can get home cameras that do all that (including emailing you an alert picture or video) for under $100 now.

I imagine they would have set off a silent alarm/motion detector causing the secutiry company to check the cameras…
