Although not a smart thing to do, what was on that video is hardly the end of the world. I see way worse behaviour than that on our roads.

There is an increasing push in this direction by law enforcement agencies in the US. I believe it generally involves the police misusing anti wiretapping or surveillance laws. Google for “recording police illegal” or something similar.

You can film in public whatever you want, so long as you don’t zoom in on peoples, um, private bits. Pretty much anything else is fine, even if they are cops. That said, I’ve often found being deliberately annoy greatly increases your chances of being arrested.

Absolutely not!

You’re allowed to photograph/film anybody & anything you see on public property. You can even photograph/film private property as long as you’re on public grounds.

A GoProHD is a fair bit more than $80. Pretty popular for MTB and other sports, tho – nice cameras. Put in an SD card, mount it whereever with a suction-cup mount, press record.

on-topic: Probably best for white utes to save the sideways action for late at night on a quiet road, methinks.

You can get a fairly good quality one for $88US. The really good ones with GPS, data recording etc can run into the $100s though.

you can get ones that automatically start when the car is turned on.
Kaiser baas road recorder, autoblackbox (had a cash for comment segment on ACA), cheap models off ebay. If its inside the car and you can press record, any handy cam would do. Just grab the right mount, otherwise your cam will become a missile in an accident.

Just remember that rubber mounts have been known to attract thieves looking for GPS’ in the glove box.
