Camel Fillet with a Shiraz Butter Glaze

Degree of difficulty: Low

You need:
1 camel fillet trimmed of sinew and cut into medallions
olive oil
butter
4 small onions, sliced
1 carrot, finely chopped
250 ml shiraz or other red wine
250 ml beef stock
camel trimmings

Method:
To make the glaze, put olive oil and onions, carrots and celery in a pan and fry until slightly brown. Add cut up camel trimmings and cook until brown. Then add wine and beef stock. Simmer for approximately 30 minutes. Strain and whisk in butter pieces until the liquid has a buttery glaze.

Brush camel fillet with olive oil and grill to your taste.

To serve pour shiraz butter glaze onto a plate, arrange camel medallions in a pyramid shape and serve with tossed salad.

No, it’s not “Lawrence of Arabia”: it’s a totally new film called “Stanhope of Manuka”. It’s an epic about coffee and blamestormimg.

I always knew Canberra would be the location of the remake of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ – this is a good start. Alert the Film Office.

What if it was a particularly large goat? Or if you got a dead cow and gave it plastic surgery to make it look like a goat int he face and hooves?

Bugger it, I’m obviously bored so I’m going home.

Thumper I think the goat’s just a unit of measurement. Possibly if you have a dead goat you want to dump, it’s free to do so cos a goat is neither larger nor smallr than a goat.

A pet ostrich could be interesting too.

Makes perfect sense though – if you can keep a horse in the ACT without registration (as they are considered stock animals) then a camel should be treated the same.

My former neighbours in Ainslie had two horses in their backyard. It’s legal, as long as you get planning approval for building the stable, and keep things clean and tidy so the neighbours don’t complain about the smell. The only animal considered out of the question for a suburban backyard is a pig (I called Urban Services to check in 2003) because there’s no way (so they say) to keep them in a clean and non-neighbour-offending state.

I hear that camels have interesting ways of deterring parking inspectors….
