ACT Policing took 12 teenagers into custody last night (Saturday, March 17) for alcohol-related offences at Skyfire, a 60 per cent decrease from previous years.
Operational Commander for the event Acting Superintendent Steve Hogarth said that for police Skyfire was much quieter this year, with ACT Policing launching a campaign targeting young people and underage binge drinking.
“Overall it was a great night, marred only by the bad weather. While we took 12 teens into custody, which is a significant decrease from last year and other recent events, some of these teenagers recorded an alcohol content of more than 0.2 which is alarming,” Acting Superintendent Steve Hogarth said.
A 16-year-old boy was unable to be lodged into custody due to his high level of intoxication. He was released into the care of the ACT Ambulance Service for observation before being collected by a parent. His initial breath analysis recorded by police was 0.315.
Of the 12 lodged into custody (all 16 and 17 years of age) 11 were boys.
“We had police on-the-ground patrolling north and south of the lake, with our officers taking the opportunity to interact with young people face-to-face. The feedback we received was positive which was pleasing.”
Last year 31 teenagers were taken into protective custody.
Police received no reports of violence or related incidents and took two adults into protective custody for intoxication.
