Canberrans who live in the ACT’s far south will need to add extra time to their commute, with the historic Tharwa Bridge to be shut for two weeks.
Routine maintenance work to ensure the structure remains safe and reliable will cause closures, and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will also be in place.
Traffic will be detoured onto Point Hut Road and Tidbinbilla Road between Monday, 29 September, and Thursday, 2 October, from 9:30 am to 4 pm. The bridge will be shut again after the long weekend, from Tuesday, 7 October, to Friday, 10 October, from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
Electronic signage will be placed on Pockett Avenue in Banks and at Tharwa Bridge to help motorists navigate the detour.

Workers are expected to arrive on site by 7 am and work until 5 pm each day. Minor delays of up to 10 minutes may be experienced before and after the bridge closure on these days.
Crews will inspect joints, tighten bolts, conduct general cleaning and repair any elements required on the bridge.
There will be a third week of work, from Monday, 13 October, to Friday, 17 October, but the bridge will remain open for the final maintenance tasks.
It is still expected that delays of up to 10 minutes will occur between 7 am and 5 pm on those workdays.
During the three weeks when crews are not working on the bridge (overnight and weekends), Tharwa Bridge will remain open.
