My personal opinion is yeah, if she could pull it off, I tip my hat and yeah, asterisks to the world. (Can’t quite see it happening but it’d be satisfying to see).

What was that about a leadership spill? I switched off, incredibly. But I note others around me have too. The media in overdrive as you’d expect but a lot of people seem to be okay, right, moving right along now, neeext. Which perhaps is good.

Really? Have you thought about the problems having a gay woman in Foreign Affairs would bring? Visiting Muslim countries or even the deeply religious Pacific Island states for example. Nobody would want to deal with her.

I reckon its a decision as to whether domestic issues are more important than foreign issues – if the former, Smith stays as Defence dinister. If the latter, Smith becomes foreign minister.

Similarly, from all accounts, Penny Wong is regarded as being highly competent and could do foreign affairs, but the focus on domestic finance means its unlikely she will be moved.

In reality, although foreign affairs is prestigious and undoubtedly important, its very rare that a good or a mediocre foreign affairs minister makes a difference to how a government is perceived (I mean, Downer was minister for years and no one thought he was a high flyer). So they can shove it off on pretty much anyone who is competent enough not to make a fool of him/herself and then not worry about it.
