The next major step in the Molonglo River Bridge project will close Coppins Crossing Road for several days during the spring school holidays.
The arterial road will be shut between Holborow Avenue (Denman Prospect) and Hazel Hawke Avenue (Whitlam) to allow precast deck slabs to be placed onto the bridge.
The closures will take place:
- from 9:30 am Friday, 26 September to 3 pm Monday, 29 September; Tuesday, 30 September (off peak) will also be used if needed
- from 6 am Tuesday, 7 October to 6 pm Sunday, 12 October
If further closures are needed, details will be updated on the BuiltforCBR website.
“During the closures, precast deck slabs will be placed on the bridge structure over Coppins Crossing Road to construct the bridge deck. Precast deck slabs are made from concrete and will sit on the girders to form the base of the bridge surface,” an ACT Government spokesperson said.
“During all closures, motorists are encouraged to avoid travel during peak periods, when possible, and where travel must occur, plan ahead and leave extra time for your journey.”
Motorists travelling south from Belconnen are advised to use William Hovell Drive, using the off-ramp to Parkes Way then merging on to the Tuggeranong Parkway.
Those travelling northbound from Molonglo Valley can take John Gorton Drive, turn on to Cotter Road, then follow the ramp on to Tuggeranong Parkway. Motorists can then take the left exit at Glenloch Interchange to merge on to William Hovell Drive.

Full closure and off-peak closures of Coppins Crossing Road are planned from November 2025 to March 2026.
These dates are yet to be confirmed, but will include:
- Further deck pours – Pouring concrete to form the surface of the Molonglo River Bridge
- Precast parapet installation – Safety barriers to be placed on the northbound and southbound bridge structures
- Twin rails and throw screen barriers – Rails separating the northbound and southbound bridge structure, screens to stop objects being thrown from the bridge
Details of changes to public transport because of the closures are yet to be announced, but will be placed on the Transport Canberra website when known.
