This ignores two things. One, as Peitab says, what if two parties actually come to agree on something? Is that banned?

The other, is the assumption that just because the Chicky comes out with a policy to reduce rego, doesn’t make that policy some new and unique idea that no one ever thought of before, to be protected from plagiarism in order to encourage ideas by allowing people to profit from them.

It is not a clever new touch screen music player or a better type of cheese grater – it is lowering those costs that your core group of (potential) voters have the greatest interest in.

So in essence, what you are saying is that if I’m someone who has spent my own money on an attempt at winning a seat in parliament, and one of the other parties takes one of my platform promises and calls it their own, that I have no reason to complain?

Just how are minor parties and independents supposed to stand any chance if it’s ok for the larger parties to take their policies and call them their own?

Open source is great, if the creator decides that their idea can be use by anyone. Anything else is just theft.

So you’re saying that two parties can never legitimately agree on an issue? If you take that thought to its logical conclusion, no party that doesn’t hold an outright majority could ever get legislation or parliamentary business enacted.
