The ACT recorded one fatality on its roads during Operation Crossroads, which saw ACT Policing join forces with NSW Police Monaro Local Area Command over the Christmas-New Year period.
Operation Crossroads (23 December – 3 January) is an initiative of Police Commissioners in Australia and New Zealand to reduce trauma over the holiday periods by raising awareness of road safety issues, in particular targeting the ‘big five’ causes – drink/drug driving, speeding, fatigue, distraction and not wearing seatbelts.
During Operation Crossroads in which double demerit penalties applied, ACT Policing conducted 9,128 breath tests and 58 roadside drug tests. Twenty eight drivers were apprehended for drink-driving, and eight drivers were found to be influenced by drugs.
The one fatality occurred when a 22-year-old Turner man riding a green Kawasaki 300cc motorcycle was travelling north along Northbourne Avenue, as he approached the intersection with Mouat Street in the left-hand lane he lost control of the motorbike and struck a traffic island.
Throughout Operation Crossroads ACT Policing issued 50 licence offence infringements, 209 speeding infringements, 179 other traffic infringements with two cars impounded.
Examples of high speeds recorded during Operation Crossroads:
• A 23 year-old Flynn man detected travelling at 140km/h in an 80km/h speed zone on Kingsford Smith Drive, Florey ($1811 fine and loss of 12 demerit points)
• A motorcycle rider detected travelling at 149km/h in an 80km zone on Adelaide Avenue ($1811 fine and loss of 12 demerit points)
Two provisional licence holders were detected travelling at high speeds:
• A 20 year-old Franklin man was detected travelling at 89km/h in a 60km/h on Belconnen Way ($307 fine and loss of six demerit points)
• An 18 year-old O’Connor man was detected travelling at 92km/h in a 60km/h on Belconnen Way ($664 fine and loss of 8 demerit points).ACT Policing will continue to target alcohol and drug impaired driving during January as part of its multi-agency road safety strategy.
