An important sculpture outside the Australian War Memorial was vandalised last month, and police have released a photograph of the man they allege inflicted the damage in an attempt to identify him.
The sculpture, titled For Every Drop Shed in Anguish, recognises and commemorates the suffering caused by war and military service.
An ACT Policing spokesperson alleged the man entered the grounds of the War Memorial after midnight on 23 October and damaged the sculpture with a sharp instrument.
Police began investigating before releasing an image of the alleged vandal while asking for the public’s help to identify him.
The police spokesperson described him as Caucasian in appearance with a large build and shoulder-length brown hair. He was wearing a blue t-shirt and long brown pants at the time of the incident.
Created by artist Alex Seton, For Every Drop Shed in Anguish is composed of 18 rounded marble pieces, some weighing up to 3000 kilograms.
When it was officially dedicated in February 2024, the War Memorial authorities said it would provide a place at the memorial for those who have experienced and witnessed the ongoing trauma that can result from service, as well as for memorial visitors to reflect on this experience.
“The Australian War Memorial has worked with veterans and their families and advocates to commission this work of art, which represents those affected by operations and during training; in war and on peacetime service,” the memorial authorities said at the time.
