That way all us poor, weak-willed men won’t have to worry about those violent, carnal urges bubbling to the surface – ’cause the sight of a woman’s muffin-tops leaking over the top of a pair of too-tight jeans jacks up our reptilian brains and turns us into rapists, apparently.

But I thought that if women dressed properly, then they wouldn’t need to worry about being raped?

I do not recall ever make fun about rape and never will. if you look at the RTN web site its aim is to stop all forms of violence against women and children.

What I find quirky is there are two links that direct you to two different ethos’s of its members. namely – One for Women only and other for Male inclusiveness.

Personally I can’t see how the “woman only” ethos is going to produce a more effective result when you’re limiting yourself to only 1/2 the population, namely; excluding the perpetrators of said violence.

There were some jokes about the name of the event, but I don’t recally too many jokes about rape. Male-bashing is very common now, so it’s nice to vent a little from time to time.

It is bizarre that you lot are offended at the slightest hint of verbal man-bashing, but yet the rape of women is a subject for jokes.

In some regimes – like the old East Germany there was almost no such thing as violent street crime, and women felt quite safe walking at night. So it is possible.

Do people think that men and women who are rapists are actually going to give a shit about this? It’s just a typical, male-bashing femo execise that does more damage to the concept of sexual equality.

Perhaps us blokes need to start a campaign called “Reclaim the Carpark”, to focus attention on women who molest our cars by not being able to reverse properly.

Worthy endeavour brought undone with the typical male bashing ideals…

How about accepting reality that there will never been enough police/security to ensure 100% safety and there will always be men out there ‘at large’ who should not be and act accordingly.

Try as you may, the pragmatist in me says this is one group who’s goal will never be reached.

While the group does focus on sexual violence, I do agree with you Thumper.
Alienating possible supporters is never a good idea.
That’s why I do like the sentiments of the November 25, White Ribbon Day.
The idea is men wear the ribbon to show their support for the end of violence against women and join in events and the campaign.
ACT Challenging Violence Against Women Campaign is, according to this postcard-thing I have here, run by the Canberra Men’s Centre.

It’s not a Canberra-specific event. I know it’s Aus wide but possibly occurs in other countries.

People should be free to walk at night and not worry about being attacked. In this case in particular, women should be free to walk about without getting raped.

So a law and order… lobbying? Advocacy? protest group? Whatever, they want to draw attention in order for attitudes to change.

I remember the “curfew on all men” shitfight at the ANU back in the mid 80s. There’d been a series of particularly violent rapes and women were meant to call security if they needed to move around the campus at night (like from the library to the ressies etc).
So the Women on Campus mob did a very clever campaign. They printed up official-looking posters and put them up everywhere, stating that due to the recent violent acts perpetrated by males, all males (over an age, 12 I think it was) were to be indoors and not at large on the ANU campus after dark.
It was brilliant, men got very indignant and bombarded ANU Admin with complaints about their liberty being curtailed like this.

It certainly drove the message home.
