An L-plater was caught speeding at 135 km/h on her motorbike before telling police she was flying along the road because she had been trying to catch up to other riders.

She will now be without her licence for the next six months because of her decision to speed.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said that at about 9:20 pm on Monday (24 March), officers were conducting speed enforcement activity on Barton Highway in Crace.

The officers then detected the 21-year-old motorcyclist travelling at 135 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

After she was stopped, she told the officers she was “catching up to another set of riders to see if they were part of her group”.

The woman, who had a learner motorcycle licence, was handed a $1841 fine and six demerit points.

Her licence was also immediately suspended for 180 days.

“ACT Policing reminds the community there is no excuse for speeding and that motorcycle riders are considered vulnerable road users,” the police spokesperson said.

“Speeding while on a motorbike significantly increases the risk of death and injury to the rider and other road users.”

Also, on 11 March, there was a crash between a bicycle and a car on Northbourne Avenue. The 70-year-old male cyclist died at the scene.
