The weather may have cooled, but things are just heating up for one of Canberra’s most remarkable communities.

Local charity Project Independence unveiled grand plans this month for a unique celebration that will indulge friends old and new.

Themed ‘Illuminating Independence’, this gala isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a rare opportunity for the public to get involved, says fundraising manager May Bhattacharya.

“Our events are usually small, intimate, and invite-only,” she says.

“But our signature gala gives everyone the chance to meet our community, learn about what we do, and support our vision of true independence for people with intellectual disabilities.

“We have gone all out this year, so you can expect a world-class cocktail gala in an unmatched setting.”

Guests will be treated to a selection of curated experiences at The Marion, one of Canberra’s most iconic lakeside venues.

Performances from local neurodiverse artists, stories shared by residents and community members, quirky awards, and other immersive activities will be matched with delectable canapés, cocktails and mocktails.

“A major highlight of the evening will be the unveiling of our ‘Independence Cocktail’, crafted in partnership with Underground Spirits,” May says.

“It symbolises empowerment and community to reflect the spirit of our event and mission.

“Our community is filled with people who have kind, loving hearts. Our team can’t wait to connect with them, hear their stories and share our own.”

There are no tokenistic ideas here. The last Project Independence Gala was a hit, with guests noting an electric, fun-filled atmosphere and genuine feel throughout the night.

Project Independence exists to help people with intellectual disabilities experience the sense of pride and security that comes from living in their own home.

The organisation runs three houses in Canberra: Latham, Phillip and Harrison.

CEO Michael Claessens says while many Australians are struggling to enter the property market, those with intellectual disabilities face almost no housing options at all.

“As ageing parents are no longer able to care for their adult children, we’re seeing a growing and urgent need for safe, supportive and sustainable housing solutions,” he says.

“Innovative models like ours offer more than just a roof over someone’s head. They provide genuine community, stability, and a path to independence.

“That’s why funds raised through Independence Illuminated are so important. They will help us expand our impact and reach more people who desperately need this opportunity.”

Founder and chair of Project Independence Glenn Keys AO says funds raised will go towards continued support of residents in Canberra and across the country.

“Project Independence is the only organisation in Australia that helps people with an intellectual disability own their own home,” Glenn says.

“It was founded here in Canberra and is rolling out across Australia.

“This gala will help create opportunities for people with an intellectual disability and raise much-needed funds for future developments. It will be a great night for an amazing cause.”

The 2025 Project Independence Gala will be held from 6 pm to 10 pm on Saturday, 31 May, at The Marion.

Tickets are $149 per person, available through Humanitix.

Project Independence will gladly offer a discount code to friends and family – simply get in touch via fundraising@projectindependence.com.au.
