Speaking of public vs private.
First year maths at ANU the lecturers made us write down if we went to public or private school. Seemed most of the private school kids only learnt what they needed to to pass the HSC and missed out heaps of the required stuff.

ANU vs UC. It depends on what you study, theres quite a lot of things at ANU that you simply can’t do at UC and vice versa. On one hand you have the professional degrees that end up as jobs and on the other you have the ones like arts degrees!

ANU If your lucky you’ll get a top professor who is leading the field of research while lecturing and likely wrote the book which is the helper for the course. (They’ll be really happy if you buy it too). They’ll be really good to learn from and you come out knowing the newest and best information of a technical level.

Or on the other hand you might end up with a fill in who was employed to teach a course simply because they didnt have anyone else or a researcher who had to teach because it was part of their contact who really couldnt be bothered to explain anything or facilitate the course much at all and relys on the text they properly havent even read themselves.

UC you get a college type teacher and learn the basics needed for the degree and nothing flash

and given I cant proofread my own post, neither seemed to have improved by ability to make a coherent sentence!

blame ACT public education for that.

I went to both… one as an undergrad which I left after 1.5 years realising that sitting around getting stoned between lectures and being a guinea pig to psych dept research wasnt my idea of fun and the other my for my post-grad after going interstate to finish failed undergrad degree at first university.

I’ll let you decide which was which.

I don’t get the whole ANU-UC slagging match.

The reality is both have none-too-impressive foundations on which they’re built.

UC is a University in name only, transformed from a CAE to attract more funds but with a culture still very much entrenched in the vocational aspects of subjects by all accounts.
Admittedly though, it is the focus on the practical over the theoretical that does make UC graduates attractive to some employers.

On the other hand, ANU is a tacked together institution. It began as research and post-grad for no other reason than Australia felt it had some catching up to do. Undergraduate studies were an add on and in some ways still feel very much like an after thought. The Arts and Music areas too were tack ons, originally shunned and then accepted.

It would be fair to say that most ANU grads I know are far more concerned about where they went to uni than anyone else. Not sure why, the place doesn’t seem particularly special.

Wow! It’s not often these days you hear of someone who actually values the traditional role of universities! EJ, I don’t agree that our tertiary system has been wrecked, or that the merger of UC and CIT will necessarily lower standards, but it is very refreshing to know that there is at least one more person out there who remembers what universities were invented for.
