Canberra lost one of its finest residents on 01-NOV-05 but his passage went largely unremarked in local media and I didn’t feel able to do justice to his memory.

The UK’s Independent has now published a suitable obituary which I would recommend to you all.

It was my privilege to talk to Michael on several occasions. As recently as Christmas 2003 he humoured my interest in his storied past.

We can but hope this nation is capable of producing his like again.

I think Laurie Oakes wrote an obit in the Bulletin (it’s online anyway) in which he quoted from one of Thwaite’s earliest poems, a line I’ve always loved (it’s a flight from Aust. to NZ, in which he talked about ‘lion-lunged’ engines propelling the plane forward.

Sad that we have to consult a Pommie rag for an obit on a celebrated Aussie. Did the CT miss it?
