The ACT community has had enough of bad drivers on its roads.

Members of the public have made almost four dangerous driving reports a day on average to police over the last year.

In May 2024, ACT Policing expanded its online reporting capabilities, allowing the public to file online reports.

Since then, road users have recorded and reported incidents such as drivers running red lights, overtaking on double lanes, stopping in the middle of the road and putting others at risk.

Police have thanked the community for pushing the number of dangerous driving reports beyond 1400 since last May and released a compilation video showing some of the incidents.

Since the start of 2025, police have received 460 dangerous driving reports online.

Police have issued 272 drivers with traffic infringement notices, 67 drivers with cautions and sent 49 warning letters.

Police only issue infringements, cautions or warnings when video footage is supplied as part of the online reporting process.

Detective Acting Inspector Jonathon Turkich said it was great to see the online reporting capability being widely adopted since it began 11 months ago.

“As a community, we have all seen the devastating consequences of reckless driving,” he said.

“Too many drivers are still engaging in dangerous driving.”

The most identified driving offences reported to ACT Policing via the online portal are failing to stop at red and yellow lights, driving without due care, improper use of a motor vehicle, failing to give a required signal, failing to keep left of double dividing lines, overtaking to left of a vehicle and using an unregistered or suspended vehicle.

Last year, police also released a compilation video of drivers running red traffic lights recorded by members of the public.

Earlier, police shared another dashcam compilation video of poor driver behaviour after 25 drivers were issued fines in a two-month period.

You need to provide video or photographic evidence of the driving offence you witnessed and may also be required to provide a witness statement to police and attend court as a witness to confirm the information in your statement.

“Police will support witnesses through the court process, noting that many matters are dealt with by police without proceeding to court,” a police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the ACT Policing Online Reporting portal would soon be expanded, allowing the community to report thefts and lost property online.

“An average of 34 online reports are received each day,” the spokesperson said.

“This includes reports related to property damage, dangerous driving, historic sexual assaults, petrol drive-offs, Crime Stoppers and Report Cyber ACT.”
