Sparks could be seen flying behind a car with four flat tyres as its driver attempted to evade police.
A 27-year-old man from Belconnen allegedly assaulted his partner on Saturday (13 September) before fleeing the scene, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
Police investigated and suspected the man could be at a home in O’Malley in the early hours of Wednesday morning (17 September) so cordoned off the area.
The man allegedly left the home and got into a VW Jetta.
“Police had placed tyre deflation devices under the Jetta’s tyres, deflating some of them as he left the scene,” the police spokesperson said.
“Further devices deflated the remaining tyres a short distance down the road.”
Even though all his tyres were flat, the man allegedly still tried to evade police so they gave chase.
The ensuing pursuit continued through multiple Inner South suburbs in Canberra before entering Queanbeyan then returning to the ACT.
During the chase, the man allegedly drove on the wheel rims and reached speeds of up to 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
He lost control of the car on Uriarra Road in Beard, crashed into a sign post and was arrested.
The man was scheduled to face ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday after he was charged with reckless driving, failing to stop for police and assault.
