An attempted murder charge has been laid after a woman allegedly tried to kill a man by repeatedly stabbing him with a steak knife in central Canberra this week.

According to an ACT Policing spokesperson, the woman had been with a man at her home in a Lowanna Street unit complex in Braddon early on Monday morning (5 January).

It is alleged she grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and stabbed him multiple times.

When police were called and arrived a short time later, they found the man outside the unit complex and bleeding heavily.

“Police rendered first aid until ACT Ambulance Service paramedics arrived and transported him to hospital,” the police spokesperson said.

“Officers located the woman inside the unit and placed her under arrest.”

The case against the woman, 37-year-old Olivia Kajkic, was first mentioned in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (6 January).

She appeared over the phone from hospital, assisted by a police officer, as the court heard she was in the facility for medical reasons.

The prosecutor said she understood Ms Kajkic needed an alcohol detox.

Magistrate Jane Campbell said she wouldn’t formally charge her as she had to be taken for a mental health assessment.

According to ACT Policing, Ms Kajkic appeared remotely via a bedside hearing in the Magistrates Court on Wednesday (7 January) where she was charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody.

The matter will return to court at a later date.
