And aren’t people held accountable when they slip up? It’s not like the cops are stacking shelves or anything. Their job involves lives. Hence the consequences of slipping up are much more serious. Anyway, this is getting way OT.

I’m just saying that, for me and me alone, given a choice of being kidnapped by an ex, that is someone who I knew and had some sort of bond with, however weird things might have gotten since, would be much less scary than a complete stranger who has no knowledge of me as a person.

Being just a piece of captive meat to a random kidnapper is a thought that scares the hell out of me far more than some of my nuttier ex’s (and I’ve had a few).

But that’s just me.

I hope she comes through well, people can be surprisingly tough when they get the chance to be.

I’ve been thinking about this idea of sentencing in teh ACT.

If magistrates are reluctant to enforce bail, as the defendant has responsibilities at home, or there is no room in the remand centre, then how about going the singapore way and infroducing a few lashes of the cane??

Think this may come down to the “eyse’s of the beholder”.

Thumper, it DOES make a difference – it makes it much worse. To be snatched off the street by a stranger and held captive would be terrible, but to be held captive by someone you trusted (or thought you could trust) would be devastating. I hope this girl’s got a lot of support, she’s going to need it.

No, it’s just that I don’t actually have a b/w opinion on law enforcement. There’s also a difference between being opposed to ‘tough sentencing’ and being anti-police. I’m glad the boys in blue are out there, I’ve said that before – I just think that they should be accountable for their actions on the odd occasion there is a slip-up and that the public’s right to fairly criticize the police should be upheld without accusations of being criminals themselves.

Many crimes can be dealt with without imprisonment. Many of them are the cause of problems within society or the individual or both and I believe that the more we look at resolutions to these problems when the symptoms, i.e. crime, arise, instead of just locking the individual and the problems away for a little while, the more chance we have of preventing further crime.

I do however believe there is a purpose for jails. Some crimes, i.e. Murder, rape, child abuse, sophisticated fraud, crimes that affect people severely for the rest of their lives or cause almost irreparable damage to the community are acts where it is clear the offender should not be in the community. Holding someone captive for 4 days and assaulting them is one of these acts.

I’m pretty sure that the regular ‘Kids arrested for shoplifting’ is going to make any sort of newsworthy item. I’m talking abot the bigger stuff like the current one at the top of the page.

JB – Maybe you will have to go and foster a working relationship with them. Then they might throw you a bone every once in a while.

When police media gives us something to work with, we’ll go with it.

The ‘Local Plod’ kick lots of goals everyday, they just don’t advertise everything they do, thus most of the good work goes unseen and unreported. Do we really need / want to know about the 30 or so people (on average) that Police arrest, summons, caution each day? That said, it does help to prove to the doubters and naysayers (Ant etc) that ACT Policing does in fact deliver good results.

On a related note the (almost) daily Police rap is pointing out that the local plod is kicking some goals recently. All they need now is the back up from the Courts,

He’ll get bail to attend drug rehabilitation and then when the horror of his action are starting to fade, the victim will have to stand up in Magistrates Court and relate her experience and relive her nightmare.

Then when it goes to the Supreme Court she will have to go through the same process only for some limp wrist Judge (take your pick) to say exactly what Headbonius said. Gaol time? I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Thats one sick individual – I hope she gets lots of support to get over what must have been a terrible ordeal.
