604 DUIs come up from 42,955 breath tests in six months

ACT Policing has caught 119 drink-drivers in June, the highest number of drink-drivers caught over a month-long period this year.

Throughout the month of June, ACT Policing targeted drink-driving, with 10,937 random roadside breath tests conducted by Traffic and General Duties members.

The highest reading last month was recorded on Friday 15 June, by a 51-year-old Watson man, who was stopped by police on Hibberson Street in Gungahlin after he was observed not wearing a seat belt. The man was taken to Gungahlin Police Station, where he returned a positive Alcohol Content (AC) reading of 0.331, more than six times the legal limit for a holder of a full driver’s licence. The man’s vehicle had also been unregistered since March 2010. He will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 1 August, charged with drink-driving, and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Over the past six months, ACT Policing has conducted 42,955 random roadside breath tests, with 604 drivers returning a positive Alcohol Content (AC) reading.

Superintendent Kylie Flower of Traffic Operations said it is concerning people continue to drink and drive, despite police publically targeting the offence.

“It is alarming to police that more than 600 drivers have been caught drink-driving this year, with 119 of those caught over the past thirty days. We will continue to target drink-driving this year, and if you drink and drive, expect to get caught,” Superintendent Flower said.

ACT Policing will be targeting speeding motorists during July.

Do they? People are caught drink driving every day of the week at all hours of the day and night.

Why is that? What details of individuals were released? Do you really think anyone is going to identify him from “51-year-old Watson man” ? Anyone could go sit in the Magistrates Court and find out who he is.

not only that but they should crush the cars if they get convicted in court, can’t remember where that happens but it would get the message across real fast XD

So by those figures that equates to 1 in 71 tested over the limit.It would be interesting to see how that compares to statistics from previous years. Needless to say far too many people are playing russian roulette with their and other people’s lives!
