I used to have a set of those thingy’s once upon a time. Got rid of them after I had been married about 10 years. Found out the wife knows everything.

Be prepared for bargain hunters to come around at the crack of dawn (even though you may of advertised 9am start) and offer you pittance for your stuff. Keep stuff you aren’t selling right away from stuff you are selling.
easily fixed:
Advertise address, but dont give the street number! (Put a sign on the street outside when you’re ready.)
quote]I have also done this and it was VERY effective. Trust me, they will knock on your door from 6am. Some people complained about not advertising the house number but I politely said it didn’t seem to stop them finding their way to my place once signage was up.

Decide what you think is an appropriate price in advance – best to mark this on bigger/expensive items.
When haggling, you need to remember whether your aim is to get rid of lots of junk, or to make money.
(If you want to make money, you probably need to go to the hassle of Allclassifieds / ebay / or to Trasho yourself)

^ This. We advertised on allhomes and nowhere else. A heap of people arrived before the start time even started. They caught my friend by surprise as it was her garage sale. One guy took a heap of stuff and gave her a fixed amount for all of it. I have a feeling that he would have been selling the items at a Trash & Treasure market. He already had a load in his car before he came to our place too.

Free advertising for your garage sale and anything that is left over at the end that you still want to get rid of.

Which you will no doubt see on sale at “professional” Trash and Treasure stalls the following morning, at a greatly increased prices…
Usually the Saturday edition of The Canberra Times is a good place to advertise along with noticeboard at local shops and a few handwritten cardboard signs attached to nearby lightposts (don’t forget to remove these after garage sale is finished – one of my pet hates is people who leave outdated signs up).
2CC have a swap/for sale thing happening on Saturday mornings where people can ring up and publicise stuff they have for sale.

Have change available. Everyone will rock up with $50 and $100 notes to pay for the Royal Doulton dinner set that they just bargained you down to $2 on.

Quirks?
Yes, you can expect a Canberran to post a useless topic on Riot Act rather than working out the information for themselves.
And tools to post even more useless responses…
Canberra Times is really the only place to advertise a garage sale (expect $50+ bill for the ad). Get signage up nearby arterial roads (and all the way to your house from there).
Much better, and cheaper, option is Trash and Treasure markets (and only costs about $15 for a car space). Many more people through.
Quirks?

If I was elling a garage I’d be weighing up whether to dismantle it and offer it as a trailerable item, or let the buyer make their own arrangements, at a cheaper price. If you’ve got the time, dismantling leads to a better likelihood of sale, however some hardened garage sale attendees take a perverse pleasure in spending hours sizing up the dismantling job before putting in an offer.
And don’t get me started on those types who turn up to garage sales and have no intention of purchasing a garage…
