Saturday on Mort Street I for the first time noticed this rather large and solid use of the pavement to advertise Germany’s biggest car maker Volkswagen.
Any of you know the history?
Some VW dealership of yesteryear?

Whatever it was it’s gone now. From the looks of it some souvenir hunter ripped it up from the ground.
Thumper is on the money.
The site used to be Greg Cusacks…Volkswagen (and later Subaru) dealership. Mort St was the new car dealership and their second hand dealership was directly behind, facing Lonsdale Street.
Facing the site, the left hand site used to be Gregorys Ford (Greg Cusack’s son) and to the right was Lennock Motor (BMC & Leyland – remember the P76?).
My dad was a VW mechanic there for 20 years.
Hey Thumper, being the modern Canberra historian of sorts, I think you should start a thread on “”Cool Urban Relics of Canberra”. The Starlight Drive-in sign would be another (rather obvious) one.

and now there’s a DA for a residential development there. Will the logo survive?
I’ve often wondered how long Dyno Tune would last in that location before the real estate monster gobbled them up. Dyno Tune are good guys, so hopefully they don’t suffer after moving.

See link to a kombi forum. Apparently it was an old Vee Dub dealership in the 50’s
