ACT Policing’s contribution to, and involvement in traffic and road safety has been further recognised with today’s release of the 2012/13 NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust Grant Program.
The NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust has awarded nine organisations with grants worth almost $400,000.
ACT Policing received the largest grant allocation of $75,900 which will allow it for the first time to undertake detailed market segmentation research into risky driver behaviours. It is the first time ACT Policing has been awarded a Trust grant.
The targeting of high-risk and anti-social driving will be a focus of ACT Policing’s traffic enforcement efforts over the next 12 months, and these have already been identified under the 2012-13 Ministerial Direction to police, recently delivered by ACT Police Minister Simon Corbell.
In awarding the research grant to ACT Policing, the Trust has acknowledged the importance of better understanding the most influential motivations for drivers’ speeding and impaired driving, segmented by age and gender. This information will allow police to develop more effective strategies and messaging around this risky road behaviour.
Safe speed is one of the four cornerstones of the national Safe System approach to road safety, as outlined by the National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020.
The ACT recorded a single digit road toll of six in 2011, making it the lowest road toll since 1959 and a two-thirds reduction from 2010.
