The man accused of driving a car into two students near St Edmund’s College last month has had his charges upgraded.
It is alleged that on 28 March, 31-year-old Tayler Christian Hazell drove a car that had been stolen from NSW into another car before hitting two teenage boys as they walked along Canberra Avenue near the school.
He allegedly drove off before coming to a stop on Canberra Avenue near the Manuka shops, then was caught by tradespeople while trying to flee the scene on foot.
The boys, aged 14 and 15 and both students at the college, were taken to Canberra Hospital where they underwent surgery before their conditions stabilised.
Hazell was originally charged with two counts of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm when he first faced the ACT Magistrates Court.
He made no application for bail and it was formally refused.
Hazell, who is from Ballarat in Victoria and has a large tattoo on his cheek that says “Family”, returned to court on Thursday (24 April), appearing over an audio-visual link from jail.

The court heard he has now been handed upgraded charges, being two counts of culpable driving causing grievous bodily harm.
He did not enter pleas to his charges and the matter was adjourned to 15 May.
His other charges related to the incident are three counts of failing to provide his particulars to another person after a crash, as well as single counts of driving without a licence, driving a motor vehicle without consent and dangerous driving.
