Mea culpa on the spelling. Thanks, p1.
There are glorious views from the summit any time of day, but sunrise and sunset are especially good. On the morning in question, I’d failed to check the lighting up times in the paper, so we had quite a while to sit up there and contemplate the universe before the light started to come up.
On another memorable occasion, my partner of the time and I watched a massive storm front sweep over the parliamentary triangle in our direction. It was like a wall of water slowly moving north to north west, gradually obscuring landmark after landmark.
I once set a run that had a false trail going all the way to the summit. Anyone getting to the top found arrows pointing back down the hill to indicate the true trail actually branched off alone a dirt trail at the base. Only one runner was dumb enough to hike up to the summit. Everyone else went looking elsewhere at a lower altitude.
Highly recommended if you’re in the area (Cook).
Looks like you guys had a lovely morning, Overheard. What a magnificent view!
I have only been up Mt Painter twice. I was about sixteen the first time, and the occasion was particularly memorable and happy. A friend and I happened to be wagging school that day, and on impulse we hiked up there and sat in the long grass making daisy chains in the sunshine. Before we left he climbed the little tower and strung them on top.
Many years later, a lot older and fatter, I huffed and puffed and struggled up the hilltop on what my much older and fitter mother considered a very pleasant walk.
Call me a chicken, but I still haven’t been game to have another crack at it!
