wrong, mum and ben were in the commodore. bens mum unfortunately remembers nothing before the crash, only waking up in the car to hear ben screaming for help but unable to move or talk to reassure him, a horrible horrible way for anyone to die. police have yet to determine who is at fault. all we know is that given the way bens mum swerved to avoid the crash unfortunately ben took the full brunt of the crash. the docters stated had he been rescued and rushed to hospital in less than the 2 hours it took to free him, he still would not have survived his injuries 🙁

bens mum is now in a conscious and stable, but still serious condition. obviously distraught and devastated at the loss of her son.

In many ways, this collision makes no sense. In the second photo on this page:

you can see the dashed line that’s the start of the overtaking lane going South towards Canberra, so it seems unlikely the Southbound vehicle pulled out to overtake just before this stretch of overtaking lane.

I guess it’s possible the Northbound driver pulled out to overtake, despite there being an overtaking lane about 3km further on.

Given this was a head-on in a 100km/h zone, I’m surprised there weren’t more fatalities, not that’s any kind of condolence to those who lost a loved one in this collision.

obviously one of the drivers made a mistake which resulted in a tragic accident.

however, there is more than one cause to this accident, and this is the poor design of the Barton Highway and other similar roads. given that there are limited opportunities to pass, people take risks when they are held up by slower cars.

How much longer do we have to put up with substandard roads? Its time for the Federal and State Governments to get serious about road design/safety and use the tax they take from petrol for its real purpose.

Indeed and near the Capricorn Stud, which is where I believe this accident happened is one such area where people do take risk. Entirely unneeded though because Canberra bound the border and the dual carriageway are not that far away and Yass bound an over taking lane is a few clicks away, but you see it time and again there.

Death trap road caused by 2 issues. #1 – slow drivers [70-80km/h in 100km/h zone] being followed by a convoy of 20+ vehicles growing more impatient by the minute and #2 – only 3 or 4 places you can overtake these slow cars on a stretch of road almost 50km long, when you find a limited relief before succumbing to another slow driver. It’s not Barton Highway, it should be renamed Barton Road.
