As part of its multi-agency road safety strategy, ACT Policing actively targeted drink and drug-affected drivers between November and January.Police removed 343 drink-drivers from Canberra roads, as well as 10 drivers detected under the influence of illicit drugs.
During the same period last year, 383 drivers were apprehended for drink-driving and six drivers were found to be influenced by drugs.
The number of special drivers apprehended under the influence of alcohol also reduced; four were detected over the three-month period, compared with eight over the corresponding period in 2011-12.
Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson of Traffic Operations was disappointed in the number of impaired drivers on our roads.
“It’s alarming that despite our best efforts, people continue to choose to drink and drive. Our message is simply not getting across, there are some people out there still not getting it,” A/Supt Anderson said.
“With every police car equipped with breath testing equipment you can be caught anywhere, anytime. Our message is simple: drink or drive”.
