A Belconnen medical centre is yet to reopen after all its patients and staff were evacuated yesterday afternoon over reports of a gas leak.
Emergency services were called to the Ginninderra Medical and Dental Centre on Wednesday morning (25 June) at about 11:30 after a “small leak” was detected outside the building.
ACT Fire and Rescue officers began HAZMAT operations, while a crew from Zinfra, contracted by Canberra gas network operator Evoenergy, worked to track down the source.
The centre, located on the corner of Nettlefold Road and Coulter Drive, was closed for the rest of the day. Patients were advised to contact the centre directly on Thursday for more information.
By 6:10 pm, Wednesday, the gas operator had found the source of the leak and was working to “isolate” it while a Fire and Rescue crew stood by for fire protection.
As of this morning (26 June), the centre remains closed and has published a “closed due to unforeseen circumstances” message on its website.
Zinfra personnel are also still on the scene, along with security guards to prevent people from entering the building.
ACT Fire and Rescue will return to the site once the issue is resolved to conduct atmospheric testing and ventilation before the building is considered safe to enter again.
There have been no reports of injuries.
Evoenergy manages the Canberra gas network, and faults can be reported through the 24-hour emergency and outages line on 13 19 09.
