At long last, Canberra commuters will soon have access to more frequent bus services on Sundays under a new weekend timetable starting later this month.

From Sunday, 31 August, local bus services will run every hour from the first service of the day until about 2 pm, while Rapid services will continue operating every 15 to 30 minutes across the weekend.

The changes will see hundreds of additional services added across the city, including:

  • 87 in Belconnen
  • 61 in Gungahlin
  • 77 in central Canberra
  • 111 in Woden
  • 54 in Molonglo and Weston Creek
  • 85 in Tuggeranong.

After 2 pm, check the Transport Canberra timetable to see which services continue running.

A new bus stop has also been built at the new main entrance to the Canberra Hospital on Bateson Road. From the end of the month, Rapid 6 and Local 902 services will stop there to provide direct access for patients, visitors and staff.

Transport Canberra executive branch manager Ian McGlinn said the update reflected changing travel patterns.

“We know that the travel habits of Canberrans have changed and there is a demand from the community for more Sunday bus services,” he said.

“We have seen a positive increase in patronage on both local and rapid services since the introduction of hourly local bus services throughout the day on Saturdays last year.”

Mr McGlinn said the 2025-26 ACT Budget had funded improvements to weekend transport, enabling Transport Canberra to increase services while maintaining reliability.

With services stopping at 2 pm, the expanded timetable doesn’t quite deliver on an ACT Labor pre-election commitment, however, which was to increase “the frequency of local routes to hourly on Sundays during the day”.

Rapid 6 services will be temporarily diverted away from bus stops on Ainsworth Street in Garran to accommodate the new Canberra Hospital stop.

Light rail timetables are unaffected and will continue running every 15 minutes on weekends.

I gotta’ admit I laughed when I read “From Sunday, 31 August, local bus services will run every hour from the first service of the day until about 2 pm…” I remember back in the day you’d have to wait at least 2hrs for a Bus on Sunday so 1hr isn’t much of a difference especially considering it’s only until 2pm. But this does make me think ‘how many people catch the bus on a Sunday? Where from and where are they going?

Where is our Transport Minister? The government hasn’t been able to update its public transport patronage statistics since last September. I asked the transport minster in March when those statistics would be updated. He is yet to reply. Nevertheless, and apparently, without any actual statics, Transport Canberra has come to the conclusion that there has been an increase in patronage.

As Transport Canberra know, they struggle to fill weekend shifts now. Where are they going to get drivers from. The drivers like and deserve time off after working a full week like the rest of us! It’s all volunteer work weekends.

🙋🏽‍♂️I’d apply for a job, your point stands though. I think it’s safe to presume that without a recruitment drive prior to this announcement, Transport Canberra intends on utilising existing staff to fill these rolls.

The TWU won’t let them hire casual weekend-only drivers with penalty rates so they’re reliant on full-time drivers volunteering for weekend work.

I understand what you mean, who wants to work weekends!? After working throughout the week, the weekends is YOUR time! But it’s possible through a rotating shift. I work every second weekend and in my job I really don’t mind it.

There has always been demand for Sunday services, and hourly services are still far from acceptable as a basic level of service.

With Sunday hourly services until 2pm, it falls short of the promise of hourly buses. I understand the limitations, but promising one thing and not quite delivering, is poor form. So you can go out and about until 2 o’clock on a Sunday, how do you get home?

Too true. Who wants to wait for an hour to go somewhere?

Acton always takes away then adds services. Their biggest problem is that drivers don’t want to work weekends without overtime. How did they get their staff to agree to this?

Acton? How is the suburb responsible for this? I’m confused as to how that works….
