Disqualified, on the run, and punching on with the cops

ACT Policing arrested a 39-year-old Latham man overnight after an incident where he abandoned his car, ran into a suburban backyard and violently resisted arrest.

Around 9pm yesterday (Tuesday, November 13), Belconnen General Duties members were on mobile patrol when they received a RAPID (Recognition and Analysis of Plates Identified) alert on a white Mitsubishi ute driving along Southern Cross Drive in Latham. The vehicle was found to be unregistered and a traffic stop was conducted on it in Scullin.

The male driver abandoned the car, ran from police and a short foot pursuit ensued. Police found the man hiding in a backyard of a nearby house and attempted to place him in custody. However, the man resisted violently, striking out at the officer and punching the constable multiple times.

The constable received treatment for cuts and abrasions at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service.

The offender was taken to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with five offences including driving whilst disqualified, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and resisting arrest. He was bailed from the ACT Watch House to face the ACT Magistrates Court on December 4.

Look at it this way if punishments actually were in line with the demands of some RA members they would only have more time to clutter up others threads with their incessant whining. So I always see these stories as a bonus. In some cases they cant even wait for the actual trial before inserting the tired cliches they think pass for a witty insight/hammer blow at injustice. I can just see them shaking their heads with a look of all knowing but weary acceptance.

Actually, the article points out that he was charged with five offences, but only listed three. He may still be charged with assault, but this will not make the finger wagging from the magistrate any more severe.

Given that it seems to be reliable and rather effective, it probably costs a fortune!

So he was bailed and will face the Magistrate in 3 weeks where he will get a severe tongue lashing.In the meantime would it not be proper to impound his ute?

Agree. How much does a rapid system cost? Surely they would pay for themselves prettynquickly and keep the rest of community safer?

I love RAPID. I’d cheerfully accept an increase in rates or whatever just to fund the installation of that system in every cop car in the territory. It finds arsehats like this piece of scum and gets them off the road, even if only for a short time. This results in the roads being safer for me, my family and other road users.

I hope the cop who got punched is OK, and managed to land a few solid thumps in reply.
