Peter Dutton is refusing to live in The Lodge if he becomes prime minister, confirming on Monday (31 March) that he won’t be relocating to Canberra should he win the federal election.

In a move that will make it even more difficult for any of his ACT candidates to get elected, the Opposition Leader told Sydney radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O that it’s their city he would choose over the national capital.

He would relocate from Queensland with his family to NSW and live full-time in Kirribilli House, overlooking the Opera House on Sydney Harbour.

Mr Dutton didn’t just state his preference when asked by the shock jocks where he would live; he added a jab to the capital city.

“We would live in Kirribilli,” he said.

“We love Sydney, we love the harbour, it’s a great city, and so yes.

“You’ve got the choice between Kirribilli or living in Canberra. I think I’ll take Sydney any day over living in Canberra.”

His public disdain for Canberra attracted immediate criticism from ACT-based federal politicians and even Anthony Albanese, who lives in The Lodge as Prime Minister and who regularly praises life in the capital.

Campaigning in Perth, Mr Albanese described Mr Dutton’s comments as displaying “a fair bit of hubris”. He linked the attitude to previous Liberal PMs who, he said, thought of themselves as “being prime minister for Sydney” only.

“It’s extraordinary that I’m a Sydneysider who’s lived there my whole life, but I’ve chosen to work and live in the national capital,” Mr Albanese said.

“I do spend time in Sydney, obviously. My electorate is there, but I believe the Prime Minister should live in The Lodge … He says he likes the harbour. You know, everyone likes the harbour, but your job is to be close to where the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet is, where meetings happen almost every day.”

Finance Minister Katy Gallagher said the Opposition Leader’s comments were further evidence of his disrespect for the national capital.

She took the opportunity to remind everyone of the Coalition’s plans to slash 41,000 public service jobs in Canberra.

“It’s no surprise to me that Peter Dutton is arrogantly measuring the curtains at Kirribilli House whilst he continues to kick Canberra,” Senator Gallagher said.

“We know he has no respect for our hometown. He openly brags about attacking our city by sacking 41,000 Canberra workers, impacting every single family in the ACT.

“This arrogant attitude is in stark contrast to Prime Minister Albanese, who proudly lives in Canberra and respects the Nation’s Capital.”

During his budget reply speech last Thursday (the night before the election was called), Mr Dutton made it clear that the public service jobs he was targeting would be from Canberra.

“We will reverse Labor’s increase of 41,000 Canberra-based public servants – saving $7 billion a year,” he said.

“That’s money we can provide back to the Australian people in frontline services.”

Independent Senator David Pocock described Mr Dutton’s latest dis of the national capital as “cheap politics”. He suggested Canberrans might help the Opposition Leader to stay out of The Lodge anyway.

“Canberrans love the bush capital and we should have leaders who celebrate it, not play cheap politics taking pot shots at it,” Senator Pocock said.

“If Mr Dutton doesn’t want the Lodge, then I’m sure Canberrans can vote in a way that doesn’t give him that option.”

Kirribilli House was never intended to be the Prime Minister of Australia’s official primary place of residence, but was set aside in 1956 as a secondary residence for prime ministers to use when performing public duties and extending official hospitality on behalf of the government during stays in Sydney.

John Howard broke that convention when he was elected PM in 1996, choosing Kirribilli as his primary residence.

Liberal prime ministers Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison did the same.

The lodge, 40 rooms large and sitting on 4.4 hectares of land. Should demolish it so we can build a huge number of units on it ( Geocon no doubt as thats Barr’s mate) and have them ready in time for the light rail to Woden!

He said he was going to put Australia first, not Sydney, but then no-one really believes he’ll do anything for Australia before serving his own personal wishes and biases.

Just imagine the former Queensland cop with very narrow education and limited knowledge of the world at large, trying to be the host at a Kirribilli garden party? Hilarious! He would just love to have people sucking up to him like Trump and becoming the PM might enable that dream, especially if he can offer brilliant views for his guests.

Canberra can feel like a political bubble—detached from the real world, filled with bureaucrats, and lacking the energy of a major global city. It’s a place where politicians and public servants talk to each other rather than everyday Australians. Living in Sydney would give Peter Dutton more exposure to the real concerns of people outside of the insular, echo-chamber environment of Canberra. Plus, let’s be honest—Canberra’s cold winters, lack of nightlife, and overall dullness don’t exactly make it the most exciting place to live. Sydney, on the other hand, has the vibrancy, diversity, and real-world challenges that would keep a politician grounded.

@Thayer Preece
Did you actually read that drivel before you hit “submit”?

Perhaps you can explain how living on the harbour in Sydney, in a tax payer funded mansion, is going to “give Peter Dutton more exposure to the real concerns of people outside of the insular, echo-chamber environment of Canberra”? Oh unless you count having billionaires as your neighbours, as providing “exposure” to the sort of people who will have “real concerns” and “real-world challenges that would keep a politician grounded”.

Yes, living in a harbourside mansion really puts you in touch with the concerns of the residents of Plumpton and, oh the horror of Canberra that Mr Dutton might suffer a paucity of nightclubs at which to hang out at night. Knowing how he loves diversity, I am sure he will be very vibrant in Sydney.

Peter Dutton thinks you should go back to the office while he chooses to live miles away from his, oh and from his electorate.
Images of Morrison ensconcing his in-laws and his wife’s paid friend into Kirribilli House leap to mind. The LNP are such elitists, they know nothing about ordinary people’s lives.

Capital Retro3:58 pm 01 Apr 25

Neither do you.

Capital Retro4:03 pm 01 Apr 25

Everyone knew the son of a past Labor PM who went to Canberra Boys Grammar School.
But then Canberra loves Labor PMs.

Capital Retro4:07 pm 01 Apr 25

Mr Albanese’s girlfriend lives with him at the lodge.
Do images of them together there announcing their forthcoming wedding “leap to you mind”?
Previous to that Ms Gillard and her boyfriend lived there together.
I can imagine what the lefty feedback would be if it were a Liberal PM and his girlfriend.

@Capital Retro
Yet again, CR, you demonstrate you haven’t managed to make it out of the 60’s.

There are many couples, nowadays, who forego the formality of marriage and choose to “live in sin”. Shameful I know, but that’s what happens when you live in the 21st Century.

PS I doubt a certain PM would have been allowed to have “that woman” in the Lodge.

Capital Retro, you appear old enough to remember Holt’s mistress (as they were then called), rumours re Gorton, that Snedden is reputed to have died on the job, Fraser with his pants down. Why do you imagine people would be prissy now? Crazy.

Capital Retro8:35 pm 01 Apr 25

I have no idea who “that woman” is. Please give me a clue.

Capital Retro8:40 pm 01 Apr 25

Yes, I remember Holt and “his mistress” and Snedden who died while sleeping with “a Lady” also Fraser and his pants down.
The thing is, none of these three examples have anything to do with the lodge.
Do you really want to list all the affairs that have happened in parliament? Let’s start with Bob Hawke.

Capital Retro8:41 pm 01 Apr 25

I love the way you outsource you replies, Sarah.

The implications are obvious Capital Retro. You appear not to be one who makes much sense. Your prissy proposition is absurd.

I will take it on your advice that Prime Ministers having affairs have nothing to do with The Lodge. @@
After all, they might have them at Kirribilli.

Roll on election! Another month of Peter Dutton’s unsmiling face on the nightly news and his unpoetic monotone is just too much to handle. He and the party hoping that underperformers including deputy leader Sussan Ley and shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor don’t open their mouths too often.
I just wish the media and those politicians criticising Dutton for his comments just stepped back and said nothing. Like really, Dutton is like all the other lightweight politicians trying to appeal to their support base by criticising Canberra. It gives them an inner glow and their supporters love it, especially in Queensland.
An ex-cop from Queensland, lacking charisma especially with female voters and leading a party where safe seats are seen as a boys club. A politician who walked out on the Apology and tried to make the 2018 election all about non-existent “African gangs”. Described as the most racist Australian political leader since the White Australia policy, Dutton represents a state that is deeply suspicious of outsiders and those in the south. A state that gave us One Nation and Clive Palmer, Dutton is a disciple of its Hillbilly Dictator Joh Bjelke-Petersen. Bjelke-Petersen turned Queensland into a police state and the most corrupt in the country. A state where the gerrymander defined politics and a premier that persecuted protestors and Aboriginal activists while supporting apartheid in South Africa, secretly denying HIV/AIDs treatments to Aboriginal communities. Sacking 1,000 electricity workers they lost their entitlements in the process and were left financially destitute.
Sydney, Dutton is all yours!

I cannot think of any country where the Prime Minister, Chancellor or President does not live in the official residence!

We have the US president live in the White House, the UK PM at 10 Downing Street, the French president at Élysée Palace, the German president at Bellevue Palace, the Italian president at Quirinal Palace, etc, etc.

Maybe Australia should sell Kiribilli!

Capital Retro3:57 pm 01 Apr 25

Maybe you should discover the internet, trudi.
https://apnews.com/article/uruguay-orsi-residence-mujica-aa4155f1911c5ba32ac155a21b713d77
And I think you will find most of the countries you have quoted have other residences that their leaders have access to like ours have Kirribilli House in Sydney.

Alan Foulkes5:33 pm 01 Apr 25

Well said Trudy and let’s take it one step further and sell the GG’s Sydney residence and use some of the – doubtless enormous – proceeds to build the official PM’s residence in Canberra in accordance with the original plan described by the cities architect.

@Capital Retro
Congratulations, CR, you’ve learnt how to use google search and come up with a single example of a leader who chose not to live in the country’s primary residence.

I do note, from your link, that the incoming President of Uruguay will “instead continue to live with his family in a modest beachside town outside of the capital Montevideo” and he will be 38 kilometres from work. It’s pretty much a commute for president-elect Yamandú Orsi, as opposed to (what will be) Dutton’s regular flights in the taxpayer funded RAAF VIP jet, to and from his, anything but “modest”, harbourside tax payer funded digs in Sydney.

Nevertheless, how many leaders of those countries, which Trudi cited (arguably much more relevant to Australia), have chosen the “other residences” as their primary abode while in office?

Capital Retro9:02 am 02 Apr 25

I didn’t do a Google search to get that info as I already knew it. I posted the link for the benefit of Trudi. Actually, the article referred to two leaders in that country who had adopted to stay at their own residences. There are probably similar situations around the world.
Montevideo is only twice the size of Canberra and has good road systems (currently, no trams to get in the way) so 38km is not a great distance as you alluded to.
I am sure that with modern communications the next PM of Australia (Albanese is the exception because he has already admitted he doesn’t have a phone in his car) will be able to contact the people he/she needs to without residing at the lodge although when he/she has to be in Canberra, that’s where he/she will stay.

@Capital Retro
So following your logic of “with modern communications the next PM of Australia … will be able to contact the people he/she needs to without residing at the lodge”, if Dutton becomes PM, he also won’t need to reside at Kirribilli House – when he is not working in Canberra, he can just work out of his Strathpine electorate office.

Capital Retro6:17 pm 02 Apr 25

If you say so, JS.

Ugh, we don’t want him in Canberra and if by some hellfire chance he is elected he can bugger off to Sydney and the Lodge can be used to house the homeless.

Rosemary Brooks1:42 pm 01 Apr 25

Mr Dutton is showing that he is not serious about saving money then. If he lives in Sydney he will have to travel more frequently to Canberra for work than if he lives in the Lodge. He just does not really have that choice.

More than happy for Dutton no never come to Canberra again. Bye

Dutton is very selective. He was not near his electorate of Dickson during the recent cyclone/floods (at some Sydney harbourside mansion for the elite and fund raising) and now wants the mansion on the other side of Sydney harbour instead of being close to work. Go figure. Anyone would think he wants to avoid the plebians. Methinks he is trying too hard to be above his station.

Nick Stevens11:16 am 01 Apr 25

Somewhere near one his nuclear power stations would be acceptable.

The problem for Dutton of living in Canberra is not Canberra. It’s Canberrans. Nobody would want to live in a place where they and their family would be daily subjected to the type of personal abuse, schoolyard nastiness and immature insults shown in these comments. Vitriol reflects on the people and place making them and anyone would have to think of family safety and peace of mind when deciding where to live. It’s always pathetic to revert to personal attacks on people you don’t agree with.

What absolute dribble.

No one can get anywhere near a sitting prime minister to begin with given the security details they have these days, and no one would largely know who their family is when they aren’t with them – trying to pretend there are ‘daily occurrences’ of such actions is nonsense, when outside of the odd incident here and there (and not just contained to Canberra), there is a large body of evidence to suggest nothing of the sort ever occurs.

Yet again, you seem to really hate Canberra, yet spend an awful lot of time posting about it.

The level of vitriol Dutton receives is nowhere near what was heaped on Keating, but Keating chose to live in the lodge and move his family here.

Great – the Libs may have produced a house someone can use. That’s more than Labor did in a year… or two… or three. Alternatively, maybe the Canberra Karens can use it as a clubhouse? Seriously, does anyone care? Grow up people!

Wow, the rusted on Liberal supporters rushing to make up for another Dutton gaffe. Just in case you weren’t aware, The Lodge is the residence of the PM in Canberra, as Canberra is the national capital, not Sydney. There is a reason for this and it involves not favouring one city or state over another. Of course there’s probably a lot of wannabe Mr Harbourside Mansion’s out there and Dutton, Mr $30m Property Portfolio, is just one of them.

Doesn’t Dutton’s have a $300m property portfolio I’m sure he won’t sleep rough while he’s cutting services for ordinary Australians and funnelling tax cuts to the wealthy as a typical Liberal PM…speaking of his property portfolio someone should do a documentary and ask a lot of questions. I’m sure there are many Australians who would be interested to know how a former QLD copper managed this inspiring achievement.

No Lodge, no job.

Sop to the Sydneysiders. Their egos are too fragile to put up with a PM who isn’t one of them.

I thought he didn’t approve of remote working.
