A four-year-old child has died after a vehicle crashed into a shop in Mawson.

Police and emergency services were called to Southlands Shopping Centre at about 10:20 am on Sunday (18 January) to reports a car had driven into a shopfront.

The boy was hit by the car and was treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Paramedics.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and was declared deceased a short time later.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital for observation.

ACT Road Policing’s Major Collision Team is investigating the circumstances of the collision and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Anyone who witnessed the incident who has not already spoken to police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers, quoting reference number P2416705.

The boy is the second person to die on Canberra’s roads for 2026.
