The Australian’s IT section brings word that Canberra Data Centres is getting a win with the CSIRO planning to move their far flung server network closer to home:
“We intend to finally consolidate into a single data centre in Canberra (within a) three- to five-year timeframe,” Dr Zelinsky said.
He expects about 760 servers — mostly physical — to be consolidated as part of the project.
“The servers will be consolidated to high-density blade servers and virtualisation technologies backed by enterprise SAN storage of approximately three petabytes,” he said.
He said the total cost of the project would be between $2 million and $3m. However, the final tally would depend on factors such as hardware replacement costs and changing data-centre rental costs. He said Canberra Data Centres was selected as CSIRO’S data-centre outsourcing partner.
“Data-centre consolidation means (our) people will be able to access their data more reliably,” Dr Zelinsky said.
