Lights Canberra Action winner 2007 - The Secret of Canbr'Argh

Apparently a few people asked about a “making of” type thing at the screening (I wasn’t actually there, I was onstage in “Noises Off” at the time. Gotta stop trying to do too many things at once…) So that’s definitely something I’m looking at. I’m currently in the process of overhauling my website, so check in occassionally and see if I get some “making of” tutorials up:

Lots of dead page links at the moment due to the overhaul. Sorry. But the “Past Productions” link works, and a few films are in the Screening Room.

One hint for that sort of keying. Use a BIG greenscreen. Ours was 3m x 6m and that was barely large enough for the outdoor stuff.

All my actors are indeed local. Some, like Leah and Dallas, are very busy on the local filmmaking scene. The others are people I’ve worked with in the theatre over the years. Canberra has a lot of good talent, you just have to find them and use them in your projects before they head off to bigger things.

And, while I’ve yet to see all the finalist films, based on what I have seen, I think this year was a VERY strong year for LCA, which bodes well for the way the local filmmaking scene is heading.

Yeah, I figured there was always the chance of that happening. But with a 10 day (less actually, with work, etc commitments) turnaround you can’t always hit everything 100% the way you’d like.

And if anyone hears me talking about doing another all-greenscreen shoot next year, kick me, hard.

Oh, I see it won “Best Use of Theme”.

Sci-fi took out best use of theme award. Thought it was ambitious but unintentionally humorous at times — especially when one of the characters spoke wisfully of ‘the before time, and a place called Garema’.

Also had to leave after the first half, seepi, and I agree with you. First pirate one was real good entertainment, sci-fi one was very good indeed and I’m still trying to find out if it won a prize.

I only saw the first half, but I thought the whole thing was great! (I could have done without the looooong and boring introdeuctions of all the filmmakers at the start, but anyway).

The first pirate film was great – a really good plot. I thought the sci-fi one was really professional too. I wrote one, but didn’t get around to filming it – maybe next year…

I thought this, the first film screened (also featuring a Pirate) and the mini doco ‘A Limestone in the Rough’ were the pick of the LCA bunch. I also quite liked the bonus film that took out the best student film award. Absolutely despised the film ‘Playdate’ and thought it was borderline offensive, but it took out best director so what do I know?

Another highlight for me was the rambling and bizarre introduction by the MC, where he referenced Clark Gable, Venuezala, and his 1950 world cinema almanac for some reason.

Overall it was a good night, and its been great to watch LCA go from strength to strength each year.
