Bail has been granted to a man accused of sexually assaulting a prospective housemate.

ACT Policing said the man, later named in court as 33-year-old Hassan Farid U Din Virk, was alleged to have had dinner with the woman at his home in Canberra earlier in January 2026 before she planned to move in.

She did not live with him at the time.

It was alleged the woman fell asleep that evening and when she woke up he was allegedly assaulting her in his bed, a police spokesperson said.

Police spoke to the woman that same night and she was taken to hospital before he was arrested.

Mr Virk faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (6 January) where he was formally charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent.

Prosecutor Corinne Kennedy originally said she would oppose him being released to bail due to the alleged likelihood of him interfering with evidence.

She said there was still evidence to be collected and some unidentified witnesses police wanted to speak to.

But after a discussion with police in the courtroom, she said she would no longer oppose him being released to bail on agreed conditions.

Mr Virk’s lawyer, Duncan Errey of Legal Aid, said his client could live on the NSW South Coast, which would alleviate the concerns around him interfering with evidence.

Magistrate Jane Campbell granted bail on conditions including Mr Virk not contact or go near the alleged victim and to surrender his passport.

“Yes,” he replied when asked if he understood the conditions.

The matter was adjourned to 29 January.
