Anthony Albanese has bent to growing community pressure and relented over his opposition to a federal Royal Commission into the Bondi terror attack.

The Prime Minister has called on former High Court Justice Virginia Bell AC to lead the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, with a deadline to report by 14 December 2026, the 12-month anniversary of the tragedy.

Fifteen people died last month in an ISIS-inspired shooting attack on Bondi Beach during celebrations on the first night of Hanukkah.

Mr Albanese had initially refused to call a Commonwealth Royal Commission, instead launching the Dennis Richardson review into Australia’s security agencies and committing to full cooperation with the immediately-called NSW Royal Commission.

But following consultation with the Jewish community leaders, victims and survivors – and after a chorus of high-level public demands for a national inquiry – the PM has changed his mind.

He said he was focussed on immediate actions, such as the Richardson review, but was also listening to the community.

“One of the reasons our nation is one of the oldest and strongest modern democracies in the world is because every Australian has the right to express their view,” Mr Albanese said.

“As Prime Minister, I respect people’s views, and I listen to them.

“I take the time to choose the right path, the course of action that will make a positive difference to our country.”

Mr Albanese said he had met and shed tears with victims and families of the attack.

He said those murdered in the antisemitic terror attack must be given the respect they deserve.

“I’ve listened, and in a democracy, that’s a good thing to listen to what people are saying, and what people are saying is, yes, we’re concerned,” he said.

The Richardson review will now become part of the Commonwealth Royal Commission, with the former ASIO boss still to give his report in April, but now as an interim report of the commission.

To ensure this is a truly national Royal Commission, all states and territories will be asked to join the Commonwealth Royal Commission, suggesting the NSW commission will now be part of the wider inquiry.

The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, in response to the Bondi terrorist attack, will cover four key areas:

  1. Tackling antisemitism by investigating the nature and prevalence of antisemitism in institutions and society, and its key drivers in Australia, including ideologically and religiously motivated extremism and radicalisation
  2. Making recommendations that will assist law enforcement, border control, immigration and security agencies to tackle antisemitism, including through improvements to guidance and training within law enforcement, border control, immigration, and security agencies to respond to antisemitic conduct
  3. Examining the circumstances surrounding the antisemitic Bondi terrorist attack on 14 December 2025
  4. Making any other recommendations arising out of the inquiry for strengthening social cohesion in Australia and countering the spread of ideologically and religiously motivated extremism in Australia.

The Prime Minister praised Ms Bell as the right choice to lead the commission.

“We certainly consulted widely – widely – and there are a range of views,” he said.

“If you look at what is required by this Royal Commission, there is no one of the stature of Virginia Bell, a former High Court judge, a former head or senior person in the New South Wales Supreme Court, someone with a background in criminal law, someone who is widely respected right across the board.”

The PM said the inquiry will be framed in such a way as not to prejudice the criminal investigation and legal proceedings into the Bondi attack, and he has every confidence in Ms Bell’s ability to ensure that is the case.

Australia’s Special Envoy for Antisemitism Jillian Segal, standing with the Prime Minister during the announcement late on Thursday (8 January), said calling a Royal Commission was the right decision.

“It does reflect the seriousness of the growth in antisemitism and its impact on our country and our democracy,” she said.

“The Jewish community and the broader Australian community have been calling for a process of this sort of authority, and it’s very important that those calls have been heard.”

Jewish community groups and the Business Council of Australia have immediately welcomed the announcement.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley said the Federal Government was shamed into calling a Royal Commission.

“The Prime Minister’s decision to finally establish a Commonwealth Royal Commission is not an act of leadership; it is an admission that his litany of excuses has collapsed,” she said.

It is so obvious that the Israeli lobby group orchestrated the pressure for the PM to change his original position. I look forward to pragmatic solutions different to those already understood by the Security agencies ( more money).

Comrades, I’m confused. Was PM Albanese right for not agreeing to a Royal Commission before and is now wrong? Or was he wrong before and is now right? Or is he always right no matter what he says, or does? What line does the Party focus group instruct cadres to push now?

Albo caved. Am saddened and enraged that First Nations people do not have a legislated voice to Parliament, but rich and powerful lobby group, and their mouthpieces, are welcomed in. An
Envoy for Antisemitism standing next to Albanese at every opportunity.

The usual Albo dud response to troubling times for the fellow comrades……..LIE and keep lieing!

Oh, I absolutely lament for the for the Socialist/Marxist left and all their fellow comrades. The Voice gets booted by the vast majority of Australians. But somehow majority rule doesn’t matter and Victoria and South Australia install a government funded indigenous Voice. That Voice only has a life as long as the left rule becauseconservativeshave already stated they will abolish those bodies. But somehow that’s wrong to. The absolute pinnacle of Marxism in Australia is where a small group of Australians which numbers around 3% of the population think it is OK to have veto powers over the other 97% of the population.

I wonder how many Australians knew what Antisemitism was before now?

Ah, every single one of Australian Jews just for a start Karl.

Great news.
The RC will find that any local anti semitism is a direct result of the indicted war criminal Netanyahu & his genocidal war in Gaza.

Ah, only a Socialist person of the fairly extreme left would think that. I stand with Israel and by recent polling around 78% of Australians agree with me (& not you).

Great news.
The RC will find that any local anti semitism is a direct result of the indicted war criminal Netanyahu & his genocidal war in Gaza.

What caused the current Gaza conflict? Could it possibly be the invasion of Isreal by a genocidal racist anti-semetic cult that then murdered 1,250 innocent Israeli citizens Oct 7th 2023? By the way the name of that cult was the radical Islamist group HAMAS.

“As Prime Minister I respect people’s views and I listen to them. Always excepting the clear majority who want much lower immigration to ease the historic housing pain, and yawning gaps in infrastructure and services. In which case, it pleases me to ignore their views, smear them as neo nazi dupes, and browbeat them about social cohesion. Now, Bondi lends me cover to double down on indiscriminate mass migration till 2028 and beyond.”

You have it! Albo actually promised to reduce immigration before that government was re-elected. Now on DFAT’s own figures there is now 700,000 extra people in Australia just for the past 12 months. Of course 450,000 of those extra Australians have student Visas. But the vast majority will never actually leave Australia because DFAT figures show that to.

ABS data shows nett overseas migration is back to pre-Covid proportions, which itself is lower than immigration was in the past. A huge number of boomers are children of immigrants and refugees rather than of returning soldiers.

Despite the facts Saunders (Rob in tow) remains committed to his anti-immigration stance, or is that just anti-immigrant today?

Albanese does deserve credit for finally listening to the polls …. ooops make that people and calling a Royal Commission into Bondi. He also deserves credit for providing broad terms of reference, even allowing his government’s performance to be considered.

However the ways he’s had to be dragged, licking and screaming to this position, the lack of consultation and the excuses have been a joke. When he cited “actual experts”, without being able to name one was ridiculous. Unsurprisingly dozens of actual experts went public within a few days. Not only did he motivate a large number and variety of Australians to criticise him, there was even a group of ALP members who felt forced to act. That he had no choice but to call a RC was obvious for weeks.

His reputation as someone who governs for “all Australians” in a “transparent” government is in tatters and we can only wait and see how much poll pain his intransience and ineptitude will bring. And how quiet have the likes of Wong and Burke been. In fact has anyone in his government supported the Prime Minister during his weeks of humiliation at all ?

One thing is certain – more political pain ahead.

What a weak leader! He should stick to his word, not cave to the people! – not my words, just a prediction of what sky is going to tell penfold to think.

Even the leftie ABC is attacking Albanese

Yeah, let’s face it the Bondi Terrorist incident was predictable. We all saw it coming so it’s pretty weak to think that there was no security or caution.

Don’t you ” love” the left. Always morally superior until they aren’t. Always right until they’re wrong. Devisive with a weak unintelligent leader who has problems constantly with the truth and is absolutely completely blinded by Socialist/ Marxist ideology and dogma.

And so narrow minded Rob they don’t expect people to be able to think for themselves.

Groupthink has much to answer for 😵‍💫🤕
