RAPID results

ACT Policing’s RAPID (Recognition and Analysis of Plates Identified) team has issued a total of 134 infringement notices to drivers over the past five days.

Between Wednesday (May 18) and Sunday (May 22), members from the RAPID team detected 57 unregistered vehicles, 24 uninsured vehicles and 14 unlicensed drivers.

Ten motorists were issued TINs for using a handheld mobile phone while driving and another three motorists were issued TINs for failing to wear a seatbelt.

During this operational period, a man’s vehicle was seized for 90 days, and he will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date charged with performing a burnout, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and driving whilst suspended.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations Jeff Knight said that RAPID remained an important element of traffic enforcement and would de deployed on a targeted basis.

“Motorists who fail to register or insure their cars are ignoring their responsibility as road users and endangering others. We will continue to target these people and by doing so, make ACT roads safer for everyone,” Sergeant Knight said.

vg, exactly which bit are you disagreing with? The fact someone got fined for unreg’d? The fact he was told there is a fine to encourage ppl to register their trailers?

As brought up, it doesnt need 3rd party but might void your 3rd party by being unregistered.. is that what you were calling out?

This doesnt make sense, because trailers dont have insurance, theyre covered by the insurance of the towing vehicle. When you register a trailer, there is no CTPI, rescue fee or any other specific fees, 100% of that money goes into general revenue.

That was the fine (approx) and pretty much what the police officer said, I think it cost me $60 (ACT) to rego my trailer. I haven’t researched it, but just maybe if the trailer is unregistered the vehicles insurance will not cover it. The fine seems excessive, if indeed the trailer is insured while unregistered. At the very least the size of the fine for no rego provides an incentive to remember to rego a trailer.

I think it’s great news, I for one was almost ran off the freeway coming back from Sydney, some bloke was on his Mobil, and proceeded to go into my lane without looking, the twat!

This is bloody great news. Good on the Rapid teams, I reckon they’re fantastic. Look at the number of dickheads they’ve picked up in just 5 days. All those unregistered, ininsured vehicles and unlicensed drivers will put you in a huge world of hurt it they hit you.

As for the unregistered, uninsured, suspended burnout fool, I hope he ends up in front of my new hero du jour, Judge Neild. Anyone can make a mistake or two, but these dedicated recidivist scofflaws should be removed from civilised society.

+1 for crushing things into cubes: you break a law with something, we’re gonna cube-ify it. Examples:
1. Caught will too much weed? We’re makin’ hash cubes now.
2. Feel like gettin’ stabby? Well try stabbing anyone with eight (relatively) blunt vertices.
3. Gonna get all gay married? Well we’re changin your balls into cubes so you can attempt to use them in……. Shooters.

As long as the vehicle towing the trailer is still covered by CTP, the trailer is too, hence just the trailer unreggy.

On another point (not related you erg0) I wouldn’t jump on rottweiler too much as he/she admitted being at fault, just the fine being rather large. Yes it is large, but at the end of the day, if that vehicle and trailer became involved in a collision, no matter who was at fault, $543 would be chicken feed and insurance companies don’t care if it was an honest mistake 🙁

I sit on the fence with “RAPID” vehicles, I was stupid circled the calender wrong and didn’t renew rego on a trailer (rego slip sits in glovebox) a rapid vehicle doing a U-turn in a servo stop my partner and we were hit with a $500+ fine for 1 week out of rego, YES it was our fault the officers did feel bad as they could clearly see it was an honest mistake but was nothing they could do. Getting fined wasn’t the problem it was the amount considering it was 3 plus times what the rego costs for 12months

Why are you on the fence about the RAPID vehicles though? Clearly, they work, and you pointed out yourself that the officers felt bad about having to ticket you, but there was nothing they could do. I don’t imagine they’d really be able to use discretion for things like an unregistered vehicle, it either is or it isn’t. And the police don’t set the amounts for the fines, the government does.
