Big strides are being made in two of Canberra’s major road infrastructure projects but it does mean motorists will need to plan alternative routes for the next steps to be completed.

Lanyon Drive will be closed between the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Monaro Highway from 7 pm this Friday, 16 January, until 5 pm Sunday, 18 January, to allow for a concrete pour on the new flyover structure.

There will be detours through the Hume industrial area along Sheppard Street throughout the weekend.

For motorists travelling from Jerrabomberra to north Canberra, it’s suggested they turn right onto Lanyon Drive at Tompsitt Drive and continue on to Canberra Avenue.

Northbound traffic along the Monaro Highway will be switched to the eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge, north of the intersection with Lanyon Drive, between Tuesday (20 January) and Wednesday (21 January).

“Two lanes of traffic currently in place will be maintained to allow road users to travel on the new structure for the first time,” an Infrastructure Canberra statement said.

“The Monaro Highway is being upgraded to deliver improved safety, freight efficiency and faster and smoother travel for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley and southern NSW.”

The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Looking further ahead, motorists who use Coppins Crossing Road will see that route closed between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue on Thursday, 5 February to allow concrete to be poured on the bridge surface.

“This work was originally scheduled for 22 January but has been postponed due to plant and concrete pump availability,” Infrastructure Canberra stated.

“The construction of the new Molonglo River Bridge and completion of John Gorton Drive will transform the Molonglo region and better connect the suburbs of Molonglo, including Denman Prospect and Whitlam to the rest of Canberra.”

The following detours are in place during all closures of Coppins Crossing Road:

  • Southbound from Belconnen: From William Hovell Drive, take the off ramp to Parkes Way and merge onto Tuggeranong Parkway
  • Northbound from Molonglo Valley: From John Gorton Drive, turn onto Cotter Road then follow the ramp onto Tuggeranong Parkway and take left exit at Glenloch interchange to merge onto William Hovell Drive.

All of these closures are weather dependent.

Anyone travelling throughout Canberra is also reminded there are significant road closures and changes during January to connect the light rail network to the extension at Commonwealth Park, and due to the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge strengthening works.

Travel impacts from the Commonwealth Bridge Avenue works can be found on the National Capital Authority’s website. Transport Canberra has details of changes to public transport.
