I appreciate that people have taken the time to comment on my photo, and I both expect and respect that it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
Alas, it appears that this isn’t the best forum to display this type of work.
Depends on whether you’re thin skinned.
Nah, not thin skinned, just surprised that I could be so Mawkish in the company of such esteemed photographic experts such as yourself – and as Westoner says, I look eagerly forward to seeing your dazzling photographic offerings on this forum so I might learn a thing or two…
😉
Touche! : )
Who is to say what is ‘natural’ or, on the other hand, ‘authentic’? Why are these things seen as so important? When I first saw the photo I thought ‘Hawaii’ although I have never been there. So it is drawing on a palette associated with the tropics. I found that quite strange; that an image of Canberra could remind me of images of a place so different, whose difference I only know through other images.
It doesn’t all have to be naturalistic though. Some of the comments remind me of the people who criticised Bob Dylan for using an electric guitar in the 1960s! Thank you for posting this.
I for one am glad that a bit of extra colour was injected into the photograph. It went a long way to offsetting the depression and pointlessness of the first 6 comments.
Nice work Rob. Liked the others on the website too.

That being said, I too have elbowed others when they’ve earned it in this forum.Great Website, Crispey- I particularly like the “Carillion and High Court” shot under the ‘Canberra Project’ tab.
Thanks very much, Girt. 🙂

I would argue people aren’t criticising the photograph itself, but rather the garish enhancements you’ve made. For mine, it looks computer-generated.
That’s ok Baggy, this style’s not for everyone so I accept that you find it garish. Of course, others will disagree and that’s what makes the world an interesting and diverse place. 🙂
PS. Yes, absolutely to the computer-generation…but by no means exclusively; I still needed to shoot a good photo to begin the canvas with…

Any chance of a link to a bigger/higher resolution image? Would make a nice desktop background.
Absolutely. If you send me your email address I’ll happily forward one for you. 🙂

You’re right, it’s probably not the best place for it.

Great job, makes Canberra look really striking. I didn’t realize Riot Act was home to so many photography connoisseurs … I’d rather see more nice photos of this great city than read more snarky comments. Let’s all play nice, hey?
I wouldn’t really describe the comments as snarky. Regardless, when you put your photos in a public forum, you should expect criticism (constructive or not). And as someone who has made a living taking photos, I think I can comment with some idea of what I’m talking about. There is nothing natural about the colours in the image. If that’s the look Rob is going for then he’s achieved it and good on him. Personally, I think there is far too much post-processing going on.
Thanks again to those who’ve continued to comment on this post…and for those who like the image – cheers, it’s appreciated! 🙂
Mysteryman – I take your point and I’m glad that you’ve clarified that your comments about the post-processing are purely your own, and not a reflection of the quality or appeal of the image. For what it’s worth, the foreground and trees are pretty close to what came straight out of the camera. It was a cool, clear morning in Autumn so the colours generated from the sun’s light were quite strong. Yes, I’ve absolutely turned the saturation dial up, but all the post-processing I do relies on a decent image being captured in the first place. I don’t consider myself a digital artist, but rather a photographer who employs certain post-processing techniques to *some* images based on the look/feel I’m ultimately trying to achieve.
I think we all agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and moreover that it’s actually ok to manipulate an image and create something different but equally appealing to a certain audience.

Getting a sunrise after it’s above the horizon is not the easiest shot to pull off – you did it with magical results!

Hi Crispey, I quite like your shot and would be happy to see more of your work here. I quite like the way the colours ‘pop’ and I wouldn’t worry about the sad and defeated comments, especially of the above hypocrite. Keep up the good work, at least you’re doing something constructive and positive.
Nice job.

Don`t be put off by the haters. It`s your photo and if you love it then that`s all that really matters. I think it`s cool.
It might have some enhancement or whatever, but I love this photo. Canberra is a beautiful place and this photo really captures that.

Thanks for the comment, Westoner. Canberra is indeed a beautiful place. There’s much to be said for being in the right place at the right time. I shot this image at about 6am in Autumn, just as the sun as rising…it was amazing to see the leaves and sky come alive with colour as the sun beamed in. The scenery was looking a bit drab until that moment, then I planted the tripod and shot like crazy! 🙂

And I admire anybody who’s up at dawn, for whatever reason. 🙂

Good illustrative/conceptual photography methods are seen, and at the same time not seen.
Oh dear, it looks like a new ad for Tobin Brothers or the hospice.
Too much enhancement (I’m assuming – happy to be corrected if i’m wrong).
Looks like something out a Mormon / Seventh Day Adventist recruitment brochure.
