Who is to say what is ‘natural’ or, on the other hand, ‘authentic’? Why are these things seen as so important? When I first saw the photo I thought ‘Hawaii’ although I have never been there. So it is drawing on a palette associated with the tropics. I found that quite strange; that an image of Canberra could remind me of images of a place so different, whose difference I only know through other images.

It doesn’t all have to be naturalistic though. Some of the comments remind me of the people who criticised Bob Dylan for using an electric guitar in the 1960s! Thank you for posting this.

I for one am glad that a bit of extra colour was injected into the photograph. It went a long way to offsetting the depression and pointlessness of the first 6 comments.

Nice work Rob. Liked the others on the website too.

I would argue people aren’t criticising the photograph itself, but rather the garish enhancements you’ve made. For mine, it looks computer-generated.

That’s ok Baggy, this style’s not for everyone so I accept that you find it garish. Of course, others will disagree and that’s what makes the world an interesting and diverse place. 🙂

PS. Yes, absolutely to the computer-generation…but by no means exclusively; I still needed to shoot a good photo to begin the canvas with…

I wouldn’t really describe the comments as snarky. Regardless, when you put your photos in a public forum, you should expect criticism (constructive or not). And as someone who has made a living taking photos, I think I can comment with some idea of what I’m talking about. There is nothing natural about the colours in the image. If that’s the look Rob is going for then he’s achieved it and good on him. Personally, I think there is far too much post-processing going on.

Mysteryman – I take your point and I’m glad that you’ve clarified that your comments about the post-processing are purely your own, and not a reflection of the quality or appeal of the image. For what it’s worth, the foreground and trees are pretty close to what came straight out of the camera. It was a cool, clear morning in Autumn so the colours generated from the sun’s light were quite strong. Yes, I’ve absolutely turned the saturation dial up, but all the post-processing I do relies on a decent image being captured in the first place. I don’t consider myself a digital artist, but rather a photographer who employs certain post-processing techniques to *some* images based on the look/feel I’m ultimately trying to achieve.

I think we all agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and moreover that it’s actually ok to manipulate an image and create something different but equally appealing to a certain audience.
