Some views from Mt Painter this morning
Trying out my new camera and lens, not quite got the hang of them yet.

I walked up here for the first time yesterday. It’s a very nice spot.

Not wanting to derail the discussion into camera nerdery, but I don’t quite get the routine dissing of the 17-40 – I have both it and the Canon 14mm prime and at 17mm the zoom delivers great images that compare *very* will with the prime.
Yeah, I don’t agree with the people who say it’s a bad lens or that others in that segment of Canon’s range are as much better as their prices would suggest.
To get the 17-40 to its price point, they did limit it in some respects, but most of those either aren’t an issue for its main uses, or can be easily corrected in post. Low light for non stationary subjects and star-fields are more difficult to overcome, but for full frame, you pay a premium to get that capability.

Need to take a little care with the 17-40, it wears an L badge but has some limitations, particularly at 20mm or wider. Judging by these shots though, shouldn’t be a big issue. Very nice work!

Great shots by the way.

Cheers, and thanks for the advice, that’s exactly the stuff the steep learning curve I was talking about consists of. More please!!

And what breed is this new camera of which you speak?
It’s a Canon 5D MkIII, the new lens is a 17-40mm Canon L lens.
Steep learning curve ahead.

Seriously stunning shots.
Many thanks.
I hope, over the coming weeks and months, to learn to do better. Johnboy willing I’ll stick any half decent ones on here.
