The ABC reports that a wave of number plate theft is afflicting our fair city.
It’s particularly handy as a precursor to stealing petrol it seems but the police are worried where it could lead.

I had both my number plates stolen when my car was parked at Canberra Hospital. Annoying. Doubly so when they stole the screws and it took ages to find someone who had suitable ones…
“None of that crap works “
There are some measures that can be taken that work well. Many are not illegal.
I had someone steal 1, only 1 of my bloody hubcaps. Went away for the weekend and came back and it was gone – I think i would of preferred my number plates stolen… Easier to replace!
I don’t think standard hairspray would work, although there have been rumours of a spray on product from the US that solves the problem. Personally I wouldn’t trust something I didn’t understand (like Stanhope!).
Oh yeah, don’t speed.
Mine got stalen in the multistorey at Manuka, cost me $35 bucks too, morons.
And doesn’t hairspray on the numberplates work against speed cameras? I dunno, I’ve only just heard about it, never put it to the test
Or just kids being idiots.
Someone stole only one of mine, and I still had to replace the plates and rego and pay 35 bucks.
“Number plate covers do nothing for speed cameras, another myth “
Unless the clear panle in front is a variable direction polarising filter. Illegal, but possible. (And no I don’t have them).
Stealing plates usually has something to do with stealing cars and disguising them, I would think.
Number plate covers also help reduce the likelyhood of having your plates stolen – and also getting your photo taken my one of those nasty cameras!
whenever i install anything on the stanley steamer which is of value and can be unscrewed, such as a cd, gps, radar detector etc, i put solder in the screw heads.
i think the screws on my number plate are so rusted on that they have morphed with the car on some kind of molecular level and now actually form part of the chassis…
Shame I didn’t see your comment earlier ducks, I do like a good old fashioned aussie sausage sizzle.
Sure, but I guess it’s all about raising the bar – it’s not like those involved in stealing fuel are exactly criminal masterminds.
Unless you’ve got personalised plates, not an issue (they stay with the car) – I’m a bit skeptical myself on what the ‘safety screw’ involves – all fasteners are removable, one way or another.
if they make it hard to remove the plates, what happens when i go to sell my car? If I need a special tool to take the screws off, wouldn’t thieves just have one too?
According to the Northside Chronicle, today “The Australian Federal Police, in conjunction with Westfield Belconnen, will be attaching safety screws to numberplates for free in the centre carpark between 10am and 5pm.” There’s a sausage sizzle also!
What an event.
