What unique sports events would you like to see in Canberra (that don't require a stadium)?

supercar race in Canberra

Remember the grand old days of Canberra sport with unique events such as the Birdman Rally and the Commonwealth Bank Cycling Classic?

The Cycling Classic had cyclists racing down the East Coast, but the highlight was an evening criterium through London Circuit.

It was a unique sports event as thousands gathered to watch cyclists at high pace make their way around the tight Civic course.

The last time that event took place in Canberra was 25 years ago.

The only significant event with a sports theme outside the norm in Canberra since then was the V8 Supercar race around the Parliamentary Triangle.

By outside the norm I mean events beyond the Raiders, Brumbies, GWS, the Capitals, the Cavalry, the Brave, Big Bash and Canberra United.

Again, the chances of a Supercar race around the Triangle and across Commonwealth Avenue Bridge appear to be non-existent.

Since then, there have been a couple of attempts to resuscitate the Supercar concept, but going through Exhibition Park.

But this proposal seems to be more of a kite-flying exercise than anything else.

In fact, over the years there have been plenty of attempts to fly kites without any actually getting off the ground.

This includes a proposal for a jet ski race in the Central Basin, but the short-lived trial for jet skis on the Lake was pretty much confined to a small section to ensure no other users were impacted.

I also remember being asked 25 years ago whether a race between an Olympic track and field sprinter and a race horse at Thoroughbred Park would attract an audience.

Needless to say, it was a non-starter.

There was also a proposal for a rowing race, with prize money, involving Olympians in the Central Basin, but restrictions on the length of the course apparently proved to be the primary reason behind this not happening.

I am no expert on the course required for dragon boat races, but they are far shorter than rowing distances.

Dragon boat races attract massive crowds across Asia. Is it worth having a look at a similar event in Canberra?

Outside the sports context, there are unique events such as Floriade, Enlighten, the Multicultural Festival, the Canberra Writers Festival and the Folk Festival adding life to the city.

Which brings us back to where this column started: the Birdman Rally. Remarkably, this cultural quirk could be coming back!

At the last election, Labor promised to return the Birdman to Lake Burley Griffin, and despite commonsense suggesting the costs would be prohibitive, especially around liability insurance, a government spokesperson has told Region that “Work has commenced”.

“Events ACT is working with stakeholders including the National Capital Authority and other jurisdictions to identify safety, accessibility, environmental and logistical issues for this study to consider, including engagement with the City of Melbourne who are currently delivering a Birdman Rally as part of the Moomba festival.”

So maybe we shouldn’t give up hope for other events returning to the capital.

Concurrently?

I’m getting old like that old bag Christine so memory is not what it was. Pretty sure we had F1 power boats on the lake once upon a time too.

What about the human luge down Black Mountain Road?
The Black Mountain Peninsular loop road could be used for amateur Motorsports.
Maybe value add to the Speedway.

Wood chopping with chainsaw events included is a natural for a place that calls itself “the bush capital”.

The Canberra 400 was a fabulous event put on at the worst possible time. I remember one race couldn’t start for ages because of a pea soup fog and the flag Marshals couldn’t see each other.

It depends on whether you want sport to watch, or sport you want to join in and play. Canberra is chock-full of many diverse sporting opportunities, and I’m sure this city punches above its weight on the many different ways to get active, competitive and have a bundle of fun as well!
The big sporting events have the best of the best, but ‘normal’ humans won’t be able to play at that level and they will have to pay a lot to watch from a distance.
In contrast, many of the niche sports will welcome interested spectators and give you something to see that you had never even contemplated before.
Go on, Explore!!

The Australian Unicycle Championships has been held in Canberra multiple times over the last 25 years- most recently in 2018. There are things happening- but the smaller sports don’t get any funding for publicity – so people may not know they are happening.

Build the civic stadium so we can actually attract international sporting events and acts. No one wants to go for a night out in Bruce.

While I would love more motorsports and events I feel the government now just needs to concentrate on health and education.
The tram is sucking up any money left to actually build any other infrastructure so now is probably not the time to expand for events.

Canberra could use some motorsport events. But this should be used to leverage a very much needed driver training facility that is suitable to train new drivers through to professional drivers, police etc.
Training, and affordable training in a range of hard to replicate on the road conditions is the desperately needed missing piece in the Road trauma reduction program.
A supercar quality track with a suburban type inset would be a valuable addition to driving down the road toll.
Sport and education are a good mix.

Ray we had a driver training facility, we had an economy trial facility, we had a venue that was an adjunct for off road Summernats & Krakk run events, it was called Canberra International Dragway with strong AFP support but was closed by the Libs & left closed by Labor.

We have a driver training facility that does really good work training all kinds of professional drivers – and non-professionals as well. The Sutton Road Training Centre does exactly what you are asking!

I remember watching a horse v human adjacent to the old Tralee speedway. The bloke was covering 100 metres against a quarter horse over 400 metres. The horse won.

A LIV golf tournament or a street Supercars race, but held in summer not July, would be pretty good.
