Thousands paid their respects on Saturday, 11 November at the Australian War Memorial to mark the 99th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18).
They observed a minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
The Remembrance Day National Ceremony included a formal wreathlaying and many high-level dignitaries and diplomats attended.
Australia’s Federation Guard and the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon performed an official welcome for the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, who delivered the commemorative address.
Wreaths were laid by the Governor-General, Senator Cormann, AWM Director Dr Brendan Nelson, ACT Senator Katy Gallagher, High Court Chief Justice Susan Kiefel plus a number of other dignitaries from around Australia and the world.
